« Part 3: More of My "Not just any box" Part 4 of My 2008 "Not Just Any Box" Winter Awards series Part 5: Making the drawer »

I finished sanding the exterior portion of the box down to 320 grit.

Then applied one coat of mineral oil. Boy did that make the grain standout.

I used Mineral Oil because it has no affect on Barb’s allergies. Otherwise it would have to stay out in my shop for a month.

The dimensions are, Height = 8” Width = 7” Depth = 4”

I’ll add some beeswax, for the final coats.

Now to finish making the drawer.

The back & front will be entirely different looking

Two choices of display

oh very cool
I love the “reversible” aspect to it.

This is one sweet “small wooden box”

Gorgeous Dick, is Barb allergic to the spalting like I am? Another thing that covers it completely is mirror coat. They use it on bar tops. You can get it through Woodcraft. It’s like epoxy. Except you can see through it and it doesn’t yellow. Beautiful project. mike

I am really enjoying watch a beautiful piece of wood turn into a beautiful box. Very cool.

Thanks for all of the fine comments!

I have explain about Barb’s allergies. She is multi-chemical sensitive, just about anything that has an odor, like

perfumes, paints, smoke, & flowers, even the fumes from popping corn bothers her.

She had Lyme disease about 18 years ago, & it threw her immune system all out of whack.

That’s why I’ve started using Mineral Oil, & Beeswax. Besides that it’s very cheap, compared to all the other finishes on the market. LOL

I can use other finishes, but they have to stay out in my shop until all of the chemicals evaporate.

The Thorsen table I made last spring had to stay in the shop about 1 1/2 months.

This is really nice, Dick. I like how organic the design is. I’m sure Barb will love it and it’s a great project for the new saw. What are the rough dimensions?
