Location: Newcastle, NSW, Oz
Website: www.newbeginnings.org.au

A minister of religion and old soldier. I am senior pastor to New Beginnings Christian Centre here in N.W. Newcastle (1 1/2 hours north of Sydney, Newcastle is a city approaching a half million people and Australia's sixth largest city) and run a counselling centre which brings affordable or free counsel to the poor. Much of my work is with the mentally ill. I am state chairman and national executive member of my denomination. I have a doctorate, masters and a couple of bachelor degrees but most of what I have learned has come from life. Having lost two wives in four years to cancer, I am now married to the beautiful Kathleen who is an avid collector of Victorian era antiques, which is very good because it allows me to spend up on new treasures for my workshop and my second hobby... On3 scale railroads based on U.S. narrow gauge.

Thanks trifern. WOW! I see you live near a place called “Normal”... how cool is that? I guess not much happens in Normal! It must have been hard for the founding fathers to decide between Normal and Ordinary.

Hello Buzzard,

Welcome to LJs. I hope that you will find this to be an exciting and rewarding part of your woodworking journey.

-- With God's help all things are possible- even woodworking. Woodworking is not just a hobby, it is an (expletive deleted) expensive hobby.

Thanks Scott, Kentucky??? Yeah… I spent a few years under the influence of one of your great exports to the world… someone called Jack. Also a rather refreshing beverage which was apparently distilled from the liquid secretions of feral turkeys. Life’s a bit tamer now as I mainly survive by ingesting copious amounts of sawdust (in spite of the world’s noisiest DC- 3HP of unbridled suck)! Yes! I use a mask (I only have one effective lung after the Army) so I have to take care but I still always seem to have the taste of sawdust in my mouth. Now where did I put that bottle of Jack? Ah, memories!

Thanks grumpy. Buzzard? I was in the Army overseas, trying to boil water for coffee over a hexamine stove during a monsoonal downpour, a hoochie over me… with (apparently) only my nose showing from the side. One of the guys reckoned I looked like a giant buzzard waiting for something to die. Forty years later I’m still Buzzard to those guys! Funny thing about the military… all these years later and I still don’t know some of their real Christian names- just their nicknames. Still love ‘em all, though! Even my first late wife (I’ve been widowed twice to cancer) was affectionately always called “Mrs. Buzzard”.

Thanks Callum,

I wish I’d started as young as you! I’m sure I’d have a lot more skill than I do now!

Thanks Paul. Love your plane avatar. While I have a lot of great power equipment, I love using my large collection of antique and veteran hand planes, all of which are in full working order and are used regularly and not just display items.

Warm regards.
