My First Blog Entry

Suggestion: you might want a third stringer for your steps. (One for the middle of a 32-36” wide stairway?)

My Step-Dad had a “fiberglass stairway” to the first floor of a remodel project home he worked on for at least 10-15 years. It worked….it could even handle my weight! He finally asked me” “How do you build a stairway?” (This after he wasted about $250 in wood trying he told me) We spent a short afternoon and like magic he had steps! It makes things a lot easier.

Well, It’s been a few weeks…

I did cut the two stringers I had for my steps… My plan was to make an ‘open’ staircase with 2 stringers, and the thick treads overhanging on both sides… But, I guess I failed to run that one past my wife… She didn’t like the idea of the treads sticking out into the room (might bump into them), so change of plans… I took PanamaJack’s advice and purchased another 2×12 for a third stinger and made my treads flush.

A stair rail, and a little trim out and we'll be all set...

Well that came out nice! Isn’t building a staircase a right of passage for a carpenter? You did a nice job. Anybody can build a stair with two stringers….adding the third creates the component of having all of the tread surfaces coplanar and would be the area where error could be injected into the project. It looks like you worked that out great! Nice job.

Great start! Now, where is the handrail with the turned spindles? Made of some exotic wood no less. Your wife must be very patient(For over a year now we have been using my fiberglass ladder). Thanks for the pictures.
