What kind of tree is this?

Blog entry by Allison posted 253 days ago 329 reads 0 times favorited 16 comments Add to Favorites

I do not know if this is the place to post this, I hope it is. I have a question regarding this tree. It was in the medium of a four lane road in southern California (Knotts Berry farm/ Disneyland) placed along with palm trees. I have driven down this particular road a zillion times but just now noticed it. The palm trees overwhelm it. For the rest of my stay down there i never saw another one. So my question is What kind of tree is this? Does anyone know? Those spike things are hard. It is so odd looking. Thanks for any help !

I remember these from when I lived in So. California. There used to be a couple at the freeway off ramp
I used to go home.

They are everywhere around here. They send out a cotton like material.

Sac-
Palm makes pretty cool turning stock. The end grain with the fibro-vascular bundles is astounding.
I used some black palm to make the knob on this box, and have made some end grain pens from this wood as well.
Turned on end grain it is very brittle. Have more than enough wood and wear a face shield…
