Regarding accessing the IR switch from the front of the air cleaner, I would have gone to a scientific toy store, hobby shop or similar and bought a $5 convex mirror and a small flat mirror. Mount them both on the wall near the IR sensor, with the flat mirror directly behind the sensor. Aim your remote at the convex mirror, the beam would be bounced to the flat mirror which is angled to send the beam to the sensor. Problem solved. Cost, maybe $10. Done.
