Doll beds for my girls

For Christmas this year, I have made 4 doll beds. First I made one walnut and one maple for my daughter and step-daughter that live with me, and then continued to make two more from walnut for my two oldest girls that live in Utah, these are those two beds. They are about 22 by 9 inches and made from solid black walnut.

The have been glued and screwed and plugged so that no hardware is visible. After that, I flush cut the plugs and then wet sanded with 400 and 600 grit with Howard’s Feed-N-Wax. Smoothed it out really nicely and darkened the wood. After a good drying time and a good wipe, it’s not greasy at all and they’re ready to ship to Utah.

I also made the mattresses and sheet covers and the pillows, and my wife, Andrea, made the two quilts.

They are either maple with walnut ‘dots’ or walnut with maple ‘dots’. Much easier to make more than one quickly.

I can’t really explain the design, I just sat down with a pencil and a compass and came up with this. There is a little flex when the bottle is in it, but overall it’s very sturdy. I might have to make a few of these. And I don’t think the pictures do it any justice.

I thought about doing it a little off straight and show some appearance of it leaning. The only problem is I made it too short. It won’t balance a full wine bottle, but it will do a beer bottle, or an empty wine bottle.

I got larger, black hands that don’t take away from the design at all, and my wife pointed out the center was not perfect, so I cover it completely. Plus photographing it on a white background looks better too. The last picture is from my previous submission so you can see the differences.

I love this clock idea and might do more similar clocks with other wooden wine case tops. I took the top and cut the opening for the pendulum. Then drilled the 2 different hole and plug sizes for the numbers from an unknown scrap of wood I had. Then cut the frame pieces from another ‘unknown’ wood. I then had to cut the length of the pendulum so that it fit centered in the hole. I really like the way the whole thing came out, and the only thing I might have to do is get a shorter shaft clock movement with a pendulum. Anyone have some suggestions just in case I start making a bunch more?

I don’t remember exactly but I think it’s seven (7) 2”x4”x8’ studs from Home Depot for $2.32 each. The most expensive part was the vise ($19.95) and I have only about $45 into this workbench, and that’s including the casters. It has come in very handy so far and the surface seems pretty durable. I’m glad I spent the time for this little project. Now, I can’t wait to get out of this rental, and get a house so I can build a nice, more permanent workbench.

Swinging Bassinette for my daughter." src="http://lumberjocks.com/assets/pictures/projects/226326-196x130.jpg" />

This bed, made mostly of poplar, took me 3 to 4 months from start to finish. I didn’t use any plans, I just thought it up as I went by trial and error. My manager helped me make the hinges from metal plates and skateboard bearings. The tongue and groove joints we done with my cheap 10” table saw. I learned a lot of little things to do, and not to do with this project. It was a very important project for me because it was for my youngest daughter. Since then, it was my nephew’s first bed, so I’m hoping it becomes a family heirloom that gets passed down over the years for those who need it.

Marble Top night stands

This is a pair of nightstands I made and finished almost a year ago not. They are made mostly of poplar. I made one and then made the second, so the finishes don’t match perfectly, but they look pretty good from either side of the bed…
