Hello everyone, hope you all had a pretty good year in 2010, and that you all had a good christmas and l hope you all have a safe new years eve and a good successfull healthy year in 2011.
I myself had planed and hoped for a better year in 2010 than it was, but as it happens not always life gives what you hope for.
The past year as with many people, has been a financial struggle, which l hope 2011 is even 50% better would be happy.

I had hoped to take 3-4 woodworking 10 week courses like l took l guess now 5-6 years ago, so l can learn more than l know.
But the courses around her are only beginner course learn shop safety and learn to run power tools etc.
I wanted to take the remaining 3-4 courses they did offer 5-6 years ago each more advanced than prior one.
But not in my area, so have to decided since l can’t take courses l need to learn tenon joints and other joints and the router course they once offered threw our local collage.

Then starting in Jan/2011, l will from Rockler, Kreg and other web sites buy DVD’s to teach me what l need to and want to learn.
Then as l go practice on on the wood l have here, learn by trial and error.
I have pretty much given up doing small drywall jobs unless for a friend or family, my fingers from fingernails to middle knuckle have lost 90% of it’s feeling same nerve damage as in both feet.

This summer 2010, had a septic installed but since l refuse to pay the extra $ 2,800.00 to contractor he says l have no warrantty on septic system.
I am filing in Jan/2011 to take contractor to small claims court to l hope recover l hope the $ 1,800.00 plus my lawyer paid him on a false bill original price we agreed on was $ 12,285.00 tax included and billed my lawyer $ 15,130.00
to this date have not seen a bills shown to me.
And am hoping to get threw small claims warrantty on the $ 14,000 plus he has been paid to date threw another company, had to max my mortgage out for it over $ 18,000 legal fee’s cmhc etc.

Then this year my father inlaw the man who taught me drywall trade, got altimers and had to put him in a nursing home 1 week ago. His wife has been in same nursing home this march/2011 will be 3 years with same decease.
It has been a trying year for my wife really past 3 years with now both her mother and father in nursing home with memory decease.
Though my father inlaw asked to go where his wife was as he knew he had problems when he couldn’t remeber things his altimers got much worse after a mild hernia operation 2 1/2 months ago.

He gave us his home, am hoping once it is inspected for mildew or possible mold if ok then renovate it and my wife and l move there May/June/2011.
It has no mortgage, hoping not to put in more than $ 30,000 in material if l can do the most of it hoping to hire very little out.
This house here have lived in since 1986, my daughter lived in the front and my son will live in the back, just charging them both the $ 400 a month they pay now till tghey get better jobs.

If after 1 year they still can’t pay the basic cost of it then we will sell it buy smaller duplex in town for them to live in.
My father inlaws place has 3 acers of mostly hard wood nice straight big tree’s, cheery, oak, maple hoping to make a deal with local saw mill to cut me some nice wood from it and same time expanding yard.
Has a 24×24 garage attached to the house will make a nice workshop.
I have been cleaning it up hoping to start moving tools wood etc over in late Jan/2011.

That will depend on my health, l yhad 2 heart attacks 6 days apart about 4-6 weeks ago first was a fairly bad one the one 6 days latter lighter.
Test showed l now have 2 clogged arteries one on left side of my neck had since first heart attack in 2000 and now have clogged artery in lower part of my heart hoped my doctor would try to fix it but he said to risky.
So will have to see a day at a time how 2011 goes, my mother and brother both died at age 48 1/2 with heaert attacks and many on my mom’s side as well.

In summery l hope all of you have a successful year in 2011, sure enjoy coming to thias site rarely do l write anything l guess doing a lot of soul searching.
Have a good day and a good new year to come all my freinds here at LJ’s
Jim

Wow, sounds like a really rough year. The fact that you survived 2 heart attacks says you’re a fighter and have the right attitude. It is great to see that you are still looking out for other folks with your house, when you could just as easily sell it and make things more secure for yourself, well done!

It is to be hoped that 2011 won’t be as eventful for you and yours, and that your FIL’s place works well for you.

Hi Jim,

I’m not going to miss 2010, either, as I suspect most folks wont. I think it was a pretty tough year for everyone.

I hope you get your wishes for 2011.

Happy Holidays.

Lee

Jim, sorry to hear of the Alzheimer’s. My wife’s mom is in year 10. The wife recommends reading a book: The 32 Hour Day, to get a grasp on what you are facing.

Many folks don’t understand the disease. They end up arguing with the parent when they say things that ‘just aren’t true’ as you remember them. The best advice I can give is it’s THEIR reality at the moment, so go with it.

If they tell you the moon is made of green cheese, agree with them and follow their lead. In 5 minutes, it won’t matter because they will have forgotten what they said. Arguing only confuses and irritates them. It’s a point that can’t be won and it really doesn’t matter in the end. It can’t be fixed.

“It’s a long slow goodbye” said Nancy Reagan and she is correct.

Thanks everyone for the very nice words, l do look foreword to a new year in 2011.
I don’t spend time thinking of yesterdays because only today and the tomorrows matter now.
I am a fighter health wise, taking 5 – 200 mg of morphine long lasting, 2 – 100 mg of quick release morphine since 1996, highblood pressure pills since 1986 heart pills since 2000, dieabetic pills, side affects 4-5 years now and many other meds tried going off many of them a few times just ended up in the hospital don’t do that no more.

Yes could sell the house here to pay for reno’s at other house with no mortgage, but then my son, daughter not making enough to pay high rent round here. l couldn’t do it to them not till they can afford a nice place of their own..
So my wife and l will struggle to keep paying what our kids can’t in this house, for as long as we can our kids mean more than anything to us.( were used of hard times me on a $ 697.00 monthly disability pension )
My youngest is a police officer and my oldest has 5 apts buildings and a submarine shop place, so their doing ok . But need to help our other 2 kids till they can get a full 40 hour work weeks.

My wife yes has it rough with her mom and dad but has strong outlook and her mom and dad mean allot to us.
Had my Dad living here from 1988 – 1995 buiilt a 1,000 sq ft addition for him on back of our home when cancer. Started geting worse then my dad died 8 years latter, but was happy living close to me, in our home with his own private entrance and home and as he said wasn’t alone.
Then in 2008 his brother moved in here he had less than a year to live same cancer, no one would take him in so we brought him hear sadly only lived 3 months here then died but l made him happy miss them both.

Have had 2 nephews here over the years no where else to go 3 friends so were used to helping people family friends, would do no less for our kids.
If can’t help some one out in need or homeless what good are we.
Thanks again to all of you with kind words l hope you all have a good year in 2011, lets make allot of sawdust lol.
Bye for now
Your Canadian woodworker Buddy

Hi Jim,
Yes 2010 has been a rough year for many of us, as with you. I also have had a rough year with deaths and family hardships. Keeping a positive attitude during these times of hardship helps us to cope. I plan to be back in the shop this coming year as well. Your story is one of inspiration to us all to keep looking up and being grateful for what we have. May this new year be one of blessings and good times for you and your family and friends. Take care and know your in my thoughts and prayers.

the best to you and yours jim
in this coming and all future years

your spirit speaks volumes
your light a beacon for all to see

we have each other thick or thin
while so many only have their fears to guide them

my prayers for us all
