I’ve been slowly working on building a modified captain’s bed for my 3 year old daughter. I thought I’d document some of the progress here. It’s been a fun project so far and my wife is itching for me to get it completed.
This is the initial concept that I came up with after seeing a similar bed in a local furniture store. Lauren’s room isn’t very large, so having some storage under the bed is really a bonus.
Lauren outgrew her crib and small bed last spring and so I needed to get something built for her so I started with just the simple box first. It is made out of 3/4 pine plywood and edge banded with oak strips.
I was kind of proud of how I cut the square pieces of oak to form a corner piece to hide the ends of the plywood.
Just today I got around to starting on the cabinet section that will eventually hold up the entire bed. The sides are made of the 3/4 pine again and it is face framed using 3/4×2 oak.
I just got a Kreg pocket jig for Christmas, so I’m loving how tight these frames and carcasses can get!
Lauren appears to approve of the progress so far :-)
