9/27/2012: Hi all. I'm at absolute beginner at woodworking. I have one woodworking tool -- a 20+ something year old RAS that I'm setting up to learn and use.

With that said, I've been studying making this leap for 3-4 years. I've got a 10 acre horse farm and have exercised a fair amount of carpentry tasks (barn building, tack room, etc) -- the latest being just finished building my 12x24 workshop on the side of my barn. It's fully wired for both 120 & 240, T&G 1x6 stained knotty pine walls in fully insulated 16" centered walls, 3/4 OSB floors on 16" centers, etc. I now just need it be (mostly) a woodworking shop!

Finally, I'm 61, and looking forward to woodworking as my post-retirement hobby as a break from farm improvements/ maintenance. Right now there isn't a lot of time among family, work and farm. My initial interests are building functional improvements to the house to learn my way around the woodworking tools as I acquire them.

I believe in function over form, so I'll be acquiring power tools and skills. At the same time I believe that "any job worth doing, is worth doing right, the first time, and with style" so I won't avoid things like dovetails (I just won't cut them by hand).

Task 1? Probably building a workbench against the long wall with the RAS built in (with the potential ability to replace with power mitre and a separate hybrid table saw).
