I'm relatively new to "fine" woodworking (3 years). I've never taken any classes, but guess that I spent at least 1000+ hours reading everything I could (sometimes more than once) and then practicing how to use my tools (hand and power) making jigs.
Some people (my wife) would say that my strength (and weakness) is my analytical ability. So far it's suited me well because there's SO MUCH TO LEARN when you get started in woodworking. Every evening after my 2 year old daughter goes to bed, I spend hours in my two car garage (that after 3 years doesn't have any cars parked in it any longer) that I've created the a perfect one man shop.
By day, I work in a large corporate insurance company (which isn't as boring as you would think) in the Information Technology division as a Usability Consultant.
My dream is to retire early and build furniture to supplement my income. Yeah, I know it's quaint and predictable, but it's now my passion.
Oh yeah, my other passion... photography. I have a great deal of equiptment and knowledge that allows me to really make sure the pictures I take of my pieces are perfect.
I extend the offer to any LJ out there, that if you're in my neighborhood, stop by the shop and we can get some pictures that will be perfect keepsakes and portfolio pieces.
