Building a Dr. White's Chest #5: Case Legs

18 days ago by DustyMark | 3 comments »

Case Legs Watch this video to view the leg construction and track my progress on the face frame. I like legs that are cut in two planes on a tall case like Dr. White’s chest. This gives the legs a more fully formed look. I used a wider lower rail with a mortise and tenon joint at the base of the face frame rather than a narrow piece with a dovetail joint. Our vacuum floor attachment will still reach under the face of the case to suck up dust balls! The sides of the original Dr. Whit...

This is written for woodworkers of all skill levels. But, please keep in mind that this is not woodworking #101. Building a Traditional Wooden Boat #2: Lofting

1438 days ago by MattD | 8 comments »

After about 12 hours of work, nearly all lofting is complete and I can finally start some construction! The famous boat builder and author, Howard I. Chapelle wrote in his aptly named book ”Boatbuilding” – ”There was never a boat built in which too much lofting had been done”. By lofting, Mr. Chapelle is referring to the laying out of the lines and drawing of construction details to full scale, a tedious practice he writes ”avoids much trying and fitting...

"5 Minute Gnome" Tutorial

190 days ago by mpounders | 4 comments »

I’ve been working on a lot of Santas for the holidays and usually have a booth setup on December 1st hopefully to sell a few things. I wanted to have something I could carve on, as a demonstration or a small give-away for kids. I started looking at the 5 minute wizards, but decided to change it up a bit. These could be either gnomes or elves, but they’re really just a wizard with feet and a little carving on the back for arms and clothes and such. I still haven’t gotten ...

Tool Chest #1: Design and Materials

491 days ago by CartersWhittling | 10 comments »

Hello. I have decided to start work on my new chest tool. I am not sure when I will get around to starting the build, but I have got the design and materials ready for when it comes time to begin. I bought the book by Chris Schwarz “The Anarchist’s Tool Chest” back in the early parts of summer http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=67610&cat=1,46096,46109. I have always enjoyed reading his blog and when my friend told me about the premise of the book I though...
