no previous part Part 1 of Lizard Staff series no next part

I am copying one of M. Pounders projects, his lizard cane. His work is amazing! I am just trying it so don’t laugh too hard as I try to carve and burn this lizard on a 5 foot staff. It is a limb from an orange tree that has aged about a year. it is carving very hard wood and it is very white. It burns OK but not a nice as basswood. My question to all of you is: How do I finish the staff? I want to stain it darker brown and leave the lizard natural or stain it Golden Oak. Has anyone worked with this wood before? Will it stain? or am I going to end up with a mess? All comments and suggestions are welcome!!!

Your lizard staff is awesome….well done.
I would try to stain a sample piece or two to see how well it works and if you like what you see.
Maybe sample some dye’s.
I think I would just oil it if it’s going to be used a lot.

That’s looking pretty good! The scales seem to be going nicely. After you paint the eyes, use some epoxy to give them a realistic glistening look, the shinier the better.

Thanks! I spent another 6 hours on the scales and they are coming along. But, man! there are a lot of them. I couldn’t wait until I was done and went ahead and sanded the burnt areas with some 400 grit. When I burn the scales it leaves sharp and ruff edges, but the 400 just polishes it up and it feels great! I don’t have a new photo but I’ll post one soon of my progress. I am considering adding some leaves on the shaft, a’ la Mr. Pounders videos. Mark you do lead me into some interesting stuff. I never done leaves before.

And today I added a ladybug for mr. lizard to stare at.

Then I added some leaves behind to add some interest. Next I will stain it and finish it.
