Pen Turning newbie!

Blog entry by interpim posted 297 days ago 353 reads 0 times favorited 5 comments Add to Favorites Watch

I know this isn’t really much of a project, but the start of a bunch of projects LOL.

I just recently purchased this pen starter kit from Penn State Industries
http://www.pennstateind.com/store/TCLPROXX.html

And got a set of blanks
Blanks

Now, what do I do? I should receive everything sometime next week, and I have never turned a pen before.
Do I need anything special besides what is being offered in the kit? do I need special bushings for each kit I want to make, or do those come with the kits when you buy them?

Hopefully i’ll have a long list of completed pens soon, and will be able to answer these questions for others.

The DVD included with the kit will give you a good start, so I’d suggest watching it first. From there, it’s a matter of practice and experimentation.

The kit you have will contain everything you need to start turning. For pen kits other than those included with the package, you’ll probably need a set of bushing for each type of kit. Be careful, it’s an addictive hobby.

DIDO Russel. Watch the video first. I personally know the guy who made the video as he worked the woodworking shows about the same time that I was working them. I learned a lot from him.
