I have just explained to my wife that if I can’t afford to buy tools it makes sound economic sense to buy good quality expensive tools I can’t afford rather than cheap and nasty tools I can’t afford…...She is still thinking about it and I’m off to the tool shop before the penny drops

I have the opposite problem. I always go for the cheap and my wife scolds me for not going the extra dollar for the quality that will clearly out last the cheap stuff. She’s right!

depending of how often you are going to use a tool
if its on daily basis go for the best
if its once or twice a year ….....
if you earn money with the tools go for the best
if its a hobby …..

Makes sense to me since you will clearly save more cents in the long term ;-)

My wife can sense when I am up to something through three foot of steel cladding at a 100 miles distance

just tell your wife …. when she discover it
that like her you need new juwlry´s , highheels , dresses and make up
they just have other names in the dayly speaches …. LOL
but don´t over run her budget for those things unless it is something you build
on the honey to do list …... that always demand a new tool … :-)))

If you can afford it go get it; if you can’t then don’t.
