Hi all,

I was asked by daughter #2 to build a coffee table of her and her partners design.

I had some Tasmanian Blackwood floating around in the shed which I thought would be nice for the frame and had some beautiful 1/4 sawn tasmanian Oak at the wood club that was free (old church pews) which I thought I could use for the top. Although the original intension was a live edge piece. This can be changed easily at a later time if she still wants the slab top.

The Oak for the top, while beautiful timber, was too pale and pinky for the look of the Blackwood base so I thought I would experiment with some Black Japan.

The finish is the first part of an Osmo finish, Osmo wood protector which I will follow up with Osmo Top Oil. The legs have no finish at the moment as I didn’t want to get oil on any surfaces to be glued.

I am really happy with the look so far and can’t wait to get it out of the clamps and do the final finishing.

Nice progress, David. I have never heard of Osmo finishes..It must be just an Australian product. Is it oil based?

cheers, Jim

Hi Jim,

It is a German company and it is an oil product. First time I have used it and am very impressed with it, it goes on beautifully and you use it VERY sparingly so although it seems expensive at first I think it is going to be pretty economical.
If you are interested in have a look at it here is a link (I have no affiliation to the company :-))

Looks gorgeous.

I don’t think I have ever seen a coffee table with the legs proud of the top like that. I kind of like it. I also like the color contrast.
