It must have been a mid-life thing for me because at age 40 I traded website design as a hobby and part-time business for woodworking. I started buying used tools off Craigslist in 2010 and after a little over a year I had a full wood shop in my garage. I had to build a 12’x14’ shed to clear the space but that was a fun project too.
My pride and joy for tools is my split top roubo workbench that I completed in April of 2015. I used the Benchcrafted hardware and a little customizing and I think it turned out great, and was a fun project I’ve been wanting to do for some time now. Made from eastern hard maple and walnut. Before, my Unisaw served as a bench/saw but I never had a vise to grab and hold a workpiece with. It made a lot of the work very hard to do. Now I have a leg vise, a wagon vise, and a couple of holdfasts and seemingly an acre of bench top to work on.
I have my Unisaw, lathe, jointer, and bandsaw on mobile bases so I can move the car out and use the whole garage floor when I get inspired, and of course my bench. I also have a few hand tools, planes and scrapers that I really like using. Mostly I do small projects, art type things, but I have done some furniture as well. For me this is a hobby, a way for me to deal with a stressful job. I’m not looking for profit so I can afford to take my time and be slow.
