Hi All

I haven’t posted anything for a while as I’ve been very busy. This is a piece I have been working on and it will be on display at an exhibition in England from Friday http://www.celebrationofcraftsmanship.com/.

It was inspired by the maiden voyage of the Titanic. The main box has some art deco inspired marquetry and consists of 3 levels representing the 3 classes on the ship. There are also three tugboat trinket boxes guiding her out.

Main box exterior french polished and tugboats sealed and waxed. Fitted with my neat hinges and my new neat screws. The neat screws allow for guaranteed slot alignment without the need to back screws of or tighten some up and with no damage to the screw slot – available soon along with a neat lock so keep an eye on my news page

This my latest commission, its a fully veneered ripple sycamore over an MDF core.. The lid has been bookmatched and bordered with walnut. The escutcheon is mother of pearl again bordered in walnut – it has a single lift out tray and the interior is lined in mulberry suede. It has been sealed with several coats of shellac andthen waxed for a silky smooth touch, it is fitted with my brass hardware which can be found here http://hawthornecrafts.com/box-hardware/ The hinges are based on the side rail hinge with a a few changes and there is no ugly square knuckle poking out the back.

This is the last of 3 boxes made for Aryma, this one took longer due to my current workload.
The vibrant marquetry is set into a grey ripple sycamore background with a birch ply core, The inside and tray is plain sycamore finished with several coats of excellose polish and lined in rich red pig suede. The exterior has been French polished and fitted with my nickel hardware.

The main challenge was to get alignment of the leaves and flowers that flow over onto the front, and of course the French polish is a challenge on its own.

This box was specially produced for Aryma, the creators of the realistic fuchsia marquetry used on the lid and box front. The interior has been finished with sawn Native Sycamore veneers and the matching Sycamore single tray is lined in rich red suede. The striking colour combinations of red, black, green and cream denote an oriental feel. The finish is an open grained French polish and high quality nickel hardware has been used.

This was a first for me using veneers that had to line up so precisely but all turned out well and they were over the moon.

This was a specially made small batch of five boxes, commissioned by the Designyard in Dublin, for one of their clients. They liked our Oak Furnace trinket boxes that are on display at the gallery, and wanted to incorporate a butterfly theme, so what could be more fitting for butterfly wings than a bookmatch in Oak Burr. Each lid is bordered using rich brown American Walnut and the inside lid is lined with black lamb nappa.

The boxes are finished throughout with several coats of blonde shellac prior to waxing.

I will post some info on how to achieve the best book match possible soon!

The Oak Trilogy is similar in theme to the Yew Trilogy, displaying a trio of Native Oak Burr portraits on the lid top surrounded by bleached Sycamore. The box is created from European Oak with a lift out tray in creamy Native Sycamore. The decorative detail on the lid and tray has an Art Deco influence and the interior has been lined in cielo blue suede and the lock plates and hinges are aluminium. It has been finished using shellac and a final coat of wax is applied for a silky soft sheen.

We were commissioned to make this box as a gift for HRH Prince William & Catherine Middleton.
The box is made from native sycamore and has 2 lift out trays. Each tray has been divided up into 12 sections and then covered in lamb nappa. On the front of the trays there is some inlay work which is an abstract crown and is made from polyester resin. The main box lid consists of 6 pieces of slip matched ripple sycamore running at an angle with the royal monogram in the middle, the monogram is made from dyed blue and boxwood veneers produced by Aryma Uk http://www.marquetry.co.uk/news/ and has been sand shaded to add depth.
The lid border and escutcheon is made with black acetal, the lock strike plates where produced on my mill from brass and the hinges were produced to my specs.
Finished with 3 coats of blonde shellac followed by wax for a silky smooth finish.

Hi all

These are images of some ring boxes I have made – again drawing inspiration from art deco and of course attention to detail being paramount.
The first ones are made from native yew and yew burr – sycamore with a ripple syc for the lid. Both are bordered in acetal and have polyester inlays. The interior is lamb nappa with a sunken area for the ring.

The last was inspired by something closer to home the Titanic’s interior which had walls panelled in oak and then into the belly of the ship was the furnace room with the furnace door that opened to the fire which was fed with coal. Made from white oak with a milled aluminium grill and lined in black suede. This box will be featured in Good woodworking magazine in April (I think).

I drew my inspiration for the lid from New York’s Chrysler building and consists of 22 pieces of ripple sycamore veneer laid out in a stepped pattern and the middle pieces are running in a different direction to show of the design. The lid is bordered with black acetal with polyester inlays. The hardware is good quality nickel and it has an ebony and aluminium escutcheon. It will be on display at the Dansel gallery in England.
