I was not very good at wood work at school but when I was 23 I built my own house, with my wife’s help, from a steel frame kit. All the internal trims were timber (i.e. the door and window frames and architraves etc) which I thoroughly enjoyed doing although not well. I have been pottering with timber ever since.
At the age of 40 (after my office job drove me crazy enough) I took 12 months leave without pay to study a furniture making course at school. The first stage of the course was a pre apprenticeship course open to everyone but to finish stage 2 and 3 of the course I had to become an apprentice cabinetmaker or furniture maker.
So the next logical step was to find someone willing enough to take on a 40 year old apprentice. This was quite easy to do as I received top marks for the course.
So now as an apprentice cabinetmaker I make kitchens out of melamine and laminated chip boards, with the very occasional veneer boards thrown in. not quite furniture but equally satisfying when you see the kitchens being installed.
I have been building up tools over the years and now try and make furniture for myself at home. This is quite difficult without the full workshop of school at your disposal.
I will post finished items and school projects soon
