Something that caught my eye while working with this piece of wood.

Nothing wrong with coastal live oak. In the late 70’s I worked with a prominent SoCal maker of Mexican and Early California furniture, doors and gates. He had a stack of MASSIVE slabs for tables. Cracks and splits like the third photo were patched with 20mm irregular shaped plugs. These slabs were dressed with a power plane and winding sticks. The tops were then hand planed and the bottoms adzed with interlocking “pozos”.
