Hi everyone,

Has anyone here had any recent dealings (post Jan 2018) with ToolsfromJapan.com?
I placed an order with them on 02 Jan this year, paid in full but my order still shows up as “processing”.
I’ve e-mailed Stuart Tierney twice for an update(at 6 and 8 weeks) and received no reply.

After 10 weeks and no responses I e-mailed telling him to cancel the order and refund me, but still no answer.

The site doesn’t give any clues as to what might be going on over there.

Does anyone here know anything

Cheers

hdj

Can share my recent experience:

Placed an order Jan 11 for some sharpening stones, order was acknowledged Jan 29.
Order received by my local USPS office on Feb 8.
Due to some USPS carrier shenanigans never received two subsequent delivery notices. 3 weeks later when I was getting worried and only had acknowledgement on ToolsFronJapan site for my order, I got a “final” delivery notice from USPS saying I had 1 week to get my box, before they shipped it back to Japan. Next day I had my shipment.

FWIW
Stuart’s site says he lost his mother late last year. He also changed his terms & conditions showing that customers need to allow for 14 days between order placement and acknowledgement. Based on emotional post in blog, seems the family loss is been very hard for him?
With US tax refund season happening, I expect a few others finally have money for new tools? Be nice to know more about how Stuart’s family situation impacts ToolsFromJapan.com.

To be honest, Order communication was non-existent. I had zero information after order placement till I saw the “acknowledged” 14 working days later. Online account never showed any information that order had shipped, or provided any tracking information (despite using upgraded EMS service).
I was getting really worried when when almost a month had passed since order was acknowledged, and had no further information. If a USPS shipping notice had not appeared in my mail box when it did, I was planning to send an inquiry email myself.

Additionally, Opening the well packaged shipment in perfect condition there was a nice hand written note, “Thank You for your order”, scribbled on the packing slip. Not trying to be a bigot, but hand writing look very feminine to me? The note coupled with lack of communication lead me to think maybe Stuart did not process the order as he might still be in Australia dealing with family matters. If it were not for fact that I lost my mother a few years ago, and was sympathetic to Stuart’s loss; I probably would not waited so long to send him a few emails myself asking for shipment information.

Strange? I just logged into my account to check my old order and noticed they added another notice since it was delivered:
03/01/2018 Acknowledged Order shipped. Tracking and shipping adjustment not completed.

Best Luck getting more information.

I was hoping to get some sharpening stones soon. Keep us updated if you hear anything.

I’m in the same boat. I’ve ordered a set of chisels back on Dec 11 and received an order confirmation immediately.(Before I read the post about his mother’s passing). I then waited 2 months before trying to get an order update. Now going on 3 months. I’ve just sent another email asking about a status. If I don’t receive any information soon I’ll request a refund or dispute with paypal. It’s a shame.

I understand family issues come up, I have a lot of sympathy for that. I recently lost two family members. And I had no expectation that I would get the chisels quickly. I expected a month or two wait (I got a set of five of the most basic Koyamaichi chisels, bone stock). But now three months and no response or even an general update on the website has left a bad taste.

I’ve ordered from him before and I know what to expect, but this is too long. If I’m being impatient please feel free to let me know.

If this doesn’t work out I’ll be back here asking if anyone has any suggestions for decent Japanese chisels.

That’s interesting.
It seems we’re having the same problem for the very same set of chisels.
If the problem is with the manufacturer then just put something up on the site or at least keep customers informed.
Seems I’ll have to try the Paypal route as well. I still haven’t had a reply.

Placed an order for chisels on 1/14. I have emailed twice with no response. Thinking about going the PayPal route as well.

Thought I’d post an update.

Just received an email from Stu and he was very apologetic and nice. He informed me that my chisels have shipped today. He mentioned a trifecta of issues (personal, lack of supply, and a lot of demand).

I should have my chisels in a 3-5 days. I sprung for EMS shipping, because why not?

Still no update and no chisels.

Really p**d off with Stuart.

Very bad customer service. Happy to take my money but not so happy to let me know what the hell’s going on!

Just a thought, I ordered my chisels about a month before you. You may want to just wait it out. Even at their most basic they are still special order items.

This is from Stu: “The delay of getting your order on it’s way was due to several reasons. First, it’s the busiest time of year for us but also the most difficult time to replenish stocks. This lack of availability starts to show itself in early December but usually isn’t a problem with some prior planning however this year, in contrast to past years, resupply delays and problems have been persistent and lengthy. “

I’m not an apologist for him, just relaying the message. If you’re really that upset go the paypal dispute route. You’ll get an answer quickly after that I’d imagine.
