This blog entry is not entirely about woodworking….

It was not my intention to assault you with offerings two days in a row, but after reading another member’s blog entry posted here a little bit earlier today I was reminded of a cool home-built item from many years ago that I had almost totally forgotten about. Took me a little while to find it and dig it out for a photo….

“handsawgeek”, you are probably asking’ “What on earth is that?”

Glad you asked.

This, my LJ friends, is an electronics breadboard …built into.. yes, you guessed it.. .a cigar box.

I concocted this gem sometime way back in the early 1980s, when electronics was one of my numerous hobbies, and the thought of referring to myself as ‘handsawgeek’ was in the distant future.

It may not look like it, but this is a deluxe model, the crème de la crème of breadboards, complete with all the bells and whistles required to construct just about any small analog or TTL logic circuit.

THE Cadillac of homebuilt breadboards!

It comes complete with a 5-volt power supply, logic switches, momentary on-off switches, indicator LEDS, inputs for external signals and power supplies, and the coup de grace….a variable frequency square wave generator!

Awesome….!

Even slicker is that it still has some parts and hookup wires attached from some long-forgotten electronics project.

Wonder if that one ever got finished….

I immediately recognized that as a breadboard. I had never considered using a cigar box for one. I built mine on an old table top..

I haven’t messed with it in a while.. might have to dig it out now lol.

Greg..Unfortunately, no…but that would be a nice add-on feature: power it up and bake up some sourdough!!

Eric, Nice set-up ...Looks like you are into doing a little e-guitar work.

I visited both of you guys’ home pages. What an impressive body of work
