Can anyone ID this old handsaw? - 1 reply

I got this last year, also there was 2 Disston D-23's, and a D-4. Craigslist has been good to me. They all are in good usable condition. I’m not sure of the wood. It looks a lot like the apple wood shown on the others. The blade is 12” x 2 and 5/8”. One side is 10 TPI, the other is 12 TPI, with alternating high and l...

It's getting confusing around here - 64 replies

I had some trouble with folks changing avatars, but I can handle that. I’ve been seeing where some are changing their names, but retaining the rest of the profile.OK, fair enough. Now I’m seeing more than 1 person using the same name. What’s next? I’m not naming names, it’s not about that. Most places I’ve logg...

Is this another new feature? - 6 replies

I replied on a forum topic. Now, when someone else replies, I get an e-mail from lumberjocks notifier. That’s a clever way to get me to shut up, it will work. I hope it’s an error.

I love walnut - 14 replies

A few months back , a friend gave me 3 big firewood size pieces of walnut. It wasn’t in real good shape, a lot of rot, but I did get some usable lathe stock. A few days ago he asked if I wanted more. That’s like asking a drowning man if he wants a life jacket. His father has a large walnut tree that they are taking down. These ...

Workbench blues - 25 replies

I need a way to hold work pieces to my bench top. It has a face vise, but no end vise. I’ve been considering this Veritas surface vise, or this Veritas wonder dog. I think I’ll have to lose at least 1 drawer to install an end vise. Any ideas? Thanks!

Am I the only one? - 17 replies

I am a fan of the NFL. I don’t paint my face or get stupid about it, but I do enjoy a football game. It is the only sport I pay any attention to. This season it’s all about Brett Favre. Every time I watch any show about the NFL, about half is about Favre and the remainder is about the rest of the league. It’s been like that ...

What happened to stickies? - 8 replies

Or is this another case of me remembering something that never happened? I thought it was a nice feature. FAQ’s and all that. It saved me some time looking for things. Wasn’t there a tab up there by Pulse,Online, Shuffle , and My Lumberjocks in the upper right hand corner? Just wondering…

Paypal blues - 26 replies

Is it always this hard, or is it me? I recently created a separate bank account, solely for paypal. I thought I could put money in the bank to spend online. When I try to make a purchase, not e-bay, they want a credit card number. Paypal has verified the bank account. According to their tutorial, paypal will transfer funds from my bank to...

Wood movement on a small scale - 8 replies

I’m kicking around the idea of making another cane. I would like to inlay a dark colored wood into a light colored wood for the handle. Such as: This is just a mockup made from scraps. The dark wood will be face grain, inlayed into the end grain of the light wood.It is essentially a mortise and tenon joint. The mockup in the pictu...

Wood swap? - 8 replies

I picked up some flat rate shipping boxes at the post office today. The guy said shipping is $14.50 anywhere in the USA. I filled up 3 boxes with some wood I cut. It’s all local Ohio River valley woods. Here’s the deal – I send you a box, you send me a box. I pay shipping to you, and you to me. It is all sealed with An...

What a day! - 12 replies

It looks like any other day. Typical August Sunday morning. Cicadas singing, sunny , hot and humid. Just how I like it. So, what’s the deal? Today is the first day of retirement for me. Also, birthday # 58. I kicked off the celebration by sleeping late. The main event will be family cookout, with a Turtle Cheesecake. I don’t ma...

Lathe indexing chart needed - 6 replies

I’ve googled it, binged it too. I haven’t had any good results. Maybe it’s called something else? I’m looking for a chart for a 48 position indexing wheel. What I want is a chart that shows me which positions to use if I want to divide a turning into equal parts. Imagine a clock face, with 48 hours, instead of 12....

Old man eyes need help - 19 replies

Is there a way to increase the font size used when posting a comment, or in this case, starting a topic? I recently had to replace the PC at home. I use Mozilla Firefox to get here. "Woodsculpting" on DIY channel - 4 replies

Is this a new show, or am I late to the party again? I caught this yesterday on tv, there was a very talented fellow in Louisiana, harvesting and carving cypress knees. He made his own carving knives from old straight razors. He made carving look easy. I hope it is a new show, it looks like a good one.

Mocking bird blues - 8 replies

This might be normal, but it’s odd to me. I have a mockingbird near my house, and he sings at all hours. I was up at 3:30 Am today, and he was chirping his head off. I hear him every night when I get home from work at 12:30 AM. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s cool. All is dead quiet, except for him. Not even an occasional ...
