Lathe indexing chart needed - 6 replies
I’ve googled it, binged it too. I haven’t had any good results. Maybe it’s called something else? I’m looking for a chart for a 48 position indexing wheel. What I want is a chart that shows me which positions to use if I want to divide a turning into equal parts. Imagine a clock face, with 48 hours, instead of 12....

Old man eyes need help - 19 replies
Is there a way to increase the font size used when posting a comment, or in this case, starting a topic? I recently had to replace the PC at home. I use Mozilla Firefox to get here. Windows 7 is new to me with this new PC. I used Tools – Options – Content in Firefox to increase font size. I used Control Panel – Appeara...

Woodworking in America - Cincinnati LJ get together? - 25 replies
Don Newton started a thread about the Woodworking in America event coming to town. Thanks , Don! I didn’t want to sidetrack that posting . http://lumberjocks.com/topics/17758 This could be an opportunity for any LJ’s that attend to meet and greet. There’s still some time between now and October to cook up something. I&...

"Woodsculpting" on DIY channel - 4 replies
Is this a new show, or am I late to the party again? I caught this yesterday on tv, there was a very talented fellow in Louisiana, harvesting and carving cypress knees. He made his own carving knives from old straight razors. He made carving look easy. I hope it is a new show, it looks like a good one.

Mocking bird blues - 8 replies
This might be normal, but it’s odd to me. I have a mockingbird near my house, and he sings at all hours. I was up at 3:30 Am today, and he was chirping his head off. I hear him every night when I get home from work at 12:30 AM. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s cool. All is dead quiet, except for him. Not even an occasional ...

Powermatic delivery problem - 4 replies
Back in early February 2010, Powermatic put their PM 1200 air cleaner on sale. I went to a local retailer and purchased one. After 3 weeks I was told it would not be shipped until April 20, 2010. Now they say it won’t ship until June 2010. Here’s a link to it. http://lumberjocks.com/reviews/721 Am I the only one to have t...

Biesemeyer Blade Guard System - 3 replies
My Unisaw was a craigslist purchase, and this was a part of that. It is still in the box. I got a good deal on this, and am willing to pass this good deal onto someone who will use it. It has sat on the shelf since I brought it home, and I have no immediate plans for it. I am open to all offers, sale or trade. I would prefer to deal locally, thi...

How it's made - 4 replies
The Science Channel has been having a “How it’s made” marathon for a few days now, and I’m a happy guy. They could have a How it’s made channel, and I’d be cool with that. I have learned a lot, picked up some ideas, sometimes see people that make me think that my job isn’t so bad.

Spindle steady rest - 4 replies
I’m in the midst of a project, and need a spindle steady. I’ve seen a lot of homemade, and they look good. I’m thinking of buying instead of making, but all thoughts are appreciated. The only 2 that I have seen commercially made are the Oneway and Woodcraft. I have never used one. For a Jet 12 -20. Thanks!

Question for a lumbergeek ? - 13 replies
I see in a lot of posts that people insert a link to another web page into their reply. I know how to cut and paste the link, but they always seem to be about 187 characters long. The cyber savvy out there know how to make that link one word. It will be a different color than the rest of the text. I think it’s hypertext. I’m on th...

Can anyone identify this? - 19 replies
I think it’s a piece of root, but it could be a piece of burl. I’m thinking root because it has no bark. It weighs 2 lbs. 11.4 oz. It’s greatest length is 9 inches, greatest thickness is 4.5 inches. I’m open to suggestions for how to use it best. Thanks to all!

fortunately nothing. But I spent a few hours worrying about it. I had a piece of mahogany and a piece of walnut, finished sizes 8×8 x 3 and 2.5×2.5×5. The mahogany is a bowl blank, the walnut for 2 glue blocks. I was done with the mahogany, but things got smoky cutting the walnut. There must be 8 inches of sawdust down in my saw c...

Harvesting wood - pith questions - 2 replies
For about 6 months now I have been getting free wood, in the form of storm damaged and unwanted trees and firewood. I have been processing some of it into bowl and spindle blanks, and would like to get some boards out of it as well. Here’s what I’ve been doing. When cutting logs into blanks, the first cuts remove the pith or place th...
