Spindle steady rest - 4 replies
I’m in the midst of a project, and need a spindle steady. I’ve seen a lot of homemade, and they look good. I’m thinking of buying instead of making, but all thoughts are appreciated. The only 2 that I have seen commercially made are the Oneway and Woodcraft. I have never used one. For a Jet 12 -20. Thanks!

Question for a lumbergeek ? - 13 replies
I see in a lot of posts that people insert a link to another web page into their reply. I know how to cut and paste the link, but they always seem to be about 187 characters long. The cyber savvy out there know how to make that link one word. It will be a different color than the rest of the text. I think it’s hypertext. I’m on th...

Can anyone identify this? - 19 replies
I think it’s a piece of root, but it could be a piece of burl. I’m thinking root because it has no bark. It weighs 2 lbs. 11.4 oz. It’s greatest length is 9 inches, greatest thickness is 4.5 inches. I’m open to suggestions for how to use it best. Thanks to all!

Where there's smoke theres... - 1 reply
fortunately nothing. But I spent a few hours worrying about it. I had a piece of mahogany and a piece of walnut, finished sizes 8×8 x 3 and 2.5×2.5×5. The mahogany is a bowl blank, the walnut for 2 glue blocks. I was done with the mahogany, but things got smoky cutting the walnut. There must be 8 inches of sawdust down in my saw c...

Blog search? - 8 replies
Is there a way to search the blogs, similar to searching the projects? Projects are sorted by tags, even a dummy like me can find stuff that way. There’s a lot of real good info in those blogs. Thanks!

Deadly lathe accident - 11 replies
http://www.flamboroughreview.com/news/article/267516 This could have been me yesterday. A piece about 2” x 2” 10” flew off the lathe and knocked off my faceshield. No harm done. It had a crack inside and broke up.

Harvesting wood - pith questions - 2 replies
For about 6 months now I have been getting free wood, in the form of storm damaged and unwanted trees and firewood. I have been processing some of it into bowl and spindle blanks, and would like to get some boards out of it as well. Here’s what I’ve been doing. When cutting logs into blanks, the first cuts remove the pith or place th...

Hardwood supplier in Northern Kentucky - 4 replies
Great place! I went there today and got some good stuff . I picked up a Jet 1220 vs lathe a few weeks back, I got it all set up and wanted something decent to turn. It’s a family business, at the end of a 1 lane gravel road. Beautiful Kentucky scenery. I bought 2 big cherry blanks, and he gave me some oak and cedar. I can’t say enough...

Change of seasons - 1 reply
It’s going from woodworking season to motorcycle maintenance season here. Some of my tools have migrated south for the winter, at least the ones I can carry to the basement. I got most of the sawdust out, and am working on the rest. My purpose of this post is to give some options to the LJ’s who have to share a workspace with vehicl...

Boice Crane oscillating spindle sander - 3 replies
This is what I’ve been working on lately. I found it on craigslist , only the sander and the base. I put in a motor, a fan to cool the motor, link belt, switch, and a mobile base. I built a tool tray to go between the sander and the base, and made a belt guard. I have a 3/4” inch spindle, and a 2” rubber sleeve to fit on the sp...

FNG checking in - 4 replies
Hi ya’s! I’ve been lurking awhile, so I thought it was time to step up. I had been hoping I would build something real cool to use as an introduction. Realizing that probably won’t happen I decided to jump in with what I have done. I’ll post as soon as I can figure it out.
