First Project in a Long Time

I found some great ideas for building storage beds for our two boys on the internet, at Ana White Homemaker. After studying these plans for a bit, I decided I wanted to make some changes, mainly to upgrade the joinery methods and make the base cabinets deeper, so they met in the middle under the box spring. So, here's what I came up with after learning google sketchup, and going through a few design revisions. This bed is basically made up of several box cabinets that will be bolted together with KD fasteners.

Headboard Base

I started with the upright boxes below the storage hutch at the headboard, building these from reclaimed plywood from shipping crates. This worked OK, but I wanted something that looked a little nicer for the other boxes, so I picked up some nicer 1/2 inch birch plywood at a local plywood and paneling supplier. While I was there, I picked up a couple sheets of 1/4" birch for the backs.

I have the parts cut for the lower support cabinets for both beds, and have a little more work to do on the joinery before assembling those.
