cherry wood gloat

hello fellow jocks and jocketts…this is my cherry wood gloat for the year, and probably the only one i will have, i was fortunate enough to have a man advertise that he wanted someone to cut his cherry tree down and use it for furniture and the likes…i was the first to call , i went and checked it out and was like the kid at Christmas, i knew what the present was, i just didn’t know exactly what is was going to look like, the day i cut it it went to the sawyer and now about 2 weeks later, i got the call, ITS READY…i fired up the ole Chevy, and yes its an ole one, 1980..32 years old now, close to being an antique huh, well i got about 3/4 of the bed full, and there is some wonderful crotch wood, and just some of the best looking cherry Ive seen, its a wild cherry, and was pretty good size, they don’t grow to much around here…central Alabama…so i was very happy to get this tree, here it isand here is one of my friends doing his best to get it loaded so now here are today’s pictures of my cherry tree gloat and then i put it in the shed to dry

this is about it for the gloat, for a hobbyist wood worker, ill have enough cherry to last me a very long time, the first thing to be made will be a gift to the man who gave me this tree, and he was one of the nicest guys ive met, he knew the value and beauty of this tree, and let me save it from the usual around here…yea the fire pit, or fire place or wood stove….......thanks for looking in on the wood gloat of the day…grizz

wood gloat of wood gloats

well fellow jocks today started out with a small wood gloat, i was blessed with the opportunity of going into some friends land where a tornado went through and salvage some wood that was there, one was a good size dog wood tree, and the other was a very large mimosa tree, i found out that mimosa is a beautiful wood, and i wanted to try working with it, so i took the larger trunks to my local sawyer and while there, i was given a rare opportunity , if you have been to a sawyers wood lot, well there can be some huge amounts of woods he has built up with what he doesn’t sell as there smaller pieces or they might be the leftovers from wood he has worked, well today when i left, instead of an empty truck, i left with a truck full of very good woods, walnut, cypress, oak and red cedar, the walnut i got is some of the most beautiful pieces Ive seen here, and so i was extremely happy with the sawyers generosity and wore myself out today adding to my already very large stores of wood, i shall add a few pictures to show the moment…and if any of you would like to share your good fortunes of wood gloat stories, i would like to read them here…thanks for reading the blog, you will see some of the beautiful wood i have gotten in future projects…grizzman and

the truck was full to the top

and you can see a small example of what i brought home.

and one last parting shot from the back of the truck https://s3.amazonaws.com/ljimg/m583ffz.jpg!

WOOD GLOAT

well my fellow wood workers, i have scored a truck load of some of the best lumber you can get for what was the timbers and wood that built this country, YES, antique southern yellow heart pine, i have 4 boards that are almost 15 inches wide, and they are 18 1/2 feet long…..with parts that have growth rings so close, its hard to count them…..and the rest of the wood , they are all 18 feet long, but just not as wide, these boards have been laying flat in the atic of a very old house since around 1920…no nails holes…just a little white wash on one side…but these are prime boards, and for now…there in my lumbers stores…, so i wanted to share my good fortune and let you see what i have gotten…they dont come like this anymore…grizz

and here is a picture of a few smaller pieces that i planed to see the beauty..

LEW'S ROLLING THUNDER

By Bob “Grizz” PutMAN with a little help from a friend (Jim Bertelson)
.
.

.
.

Amazing twisted beauty, lies before my eye’s …
It’s the Rolling Thunder, what a grand surprise!
Surely stored up magic, from an ancient Celtic land,
Turned up into rolling wood, by Lew the wizard man.
.
.

.
.
When such beauty, was soon to be seen,
A wonderful happening, from behind the scenes…
Taking God’s wood, with your shaping and style,
Lew created a gem, that made me smile.
.
.
A wonderful gift Lew made for me,
It’s Rolling Thunder, can’t you see?
Rolling, shaping, making the dough,
.
.

.
.
What will I make, I really don’t know,
Pizza, bread, or cinnamon rolls.
.
.

.
.
I’ll roll the dice, take what’s due,
Knowing that it will be true.
Many eyes have seen her roll,
Rolling Thunder is how she’s known.
.
.

.
.
To the master of wood, and my friend,
Remember my thanks will never end.
Rolling Thunder, let’s roll on now,
Lew made me happy, to Lew I bow.
.
.

.
.

Amazing twisted beauty, lies before my eye’s …
It’s the Rolling Thunder, what a grand surprise!
Surely stored up magic, from an ancient Celtic land,
Turned up into rolling wood, by Lew the wizard man.
.
.

.
.
Now Grizz tells Jim his story, and Jim, that’s me, does too,
I swear to all you LJ’s, that this story is so true.
So thinking of some pizza, Grizz made the juices flow.
Sherie pulls out the Celtic pin, and off to work we go.
.
.

.
.
She conjures up a pizza, with some toppings and some bread,
And as the oven gets to heat, I see pizza in my head.
.
.

.
.
So out comes the pizza, to the table we all go.
We ate it all, with greedy hands, ……and I think I’ll take a doze.
.
.

.
.
So I just nod off in my chair, with the TV turned down low.
And then I had a terrible dream, I trembled when I rose.
I saw Grizz and me a fighting, in some ancient land.
If we fell into the lava, that would surely be the end.
The pin held there between us, a Celtic sun up in the sky.
Thank God I woke up soon, ‘cause nearly died, ‘tis not a lie.
.
.

.
.
So I tells my tale in an email, and send it to the Grizz,
But as the mail goes out, Grizz has sent me one of his!
We had the same bad nightmare, at the same bad time.
.
So inside the Rolling Thunder, there’s magic we can find.
So there’s got to be a moral, in this tale so strange and true,
If you split the pin asunder, a spirit comes for you!
And if you look into its eye, to see what it might do,
You’ll surely come to understand, that the spirit’s name is….
LEW.

.
.

.
.

The site is sort of a showcase for woodworking. Putman’s birdhouse beat out more than 50 entries from across the country.

Bob Putman and his award-winning birdhouse.

The house is built from five different types of wood, pecan red cedar, walnut, dogwood and antique Southern heart pine.

For more about Putman’s house and his woodworking skills, look for our October issue of Peach Living magazine, available later this month across Chilton County.
Email Comments

Wow !!!!!

I can’t wait to see the full article, and more pictures. THAT it the most incredible birdhouse I have EVER seen.

If I were Robert Putman, I would use an online reservations website. Fall is coming, and … when the snowbirds start flying South … you’re going to be ALL booked up !!!

Fantastic work, Sir. Keep it coming !!!!

wood gloat from a water damaged family home.

this is a sad story of sorts , but one that has a golden ending. my wife’s great grandfather moved here to verbena in the late 1870’s and built a huge southern home, its a beautiful home that sits on 80 acres and surrounds our home we have built here, well a few days ago my wife discovered water pouring out of the house on the back wall, a broken pipe has now caused im sure over 100,000 dollars worth of damage and her grandfathers bedroom has been destroyed, along with all of the antique furniture that was in there, i have recovered and kept the bed he had in there, it was a bed made of walnut with lots of veneer, which is all lost, but i have kept all i could so i can reuse it as a template for the new veneer. but for now this is the best part of the story, i have been able to recover most of the antique southern heart pine that has been taken down, a lot of it has mold and will have to be cleaned and it will be a very big job, i will look for suggestions here in the post for ways of cleaning it, but as for now im thinking to pressure wash it to get rid of the mold and re stack it all , let it dry, and then re mill what has to be cut out or trimmed and use it for projects that i will design, i have an idea to make something for all of the grandchildren, but that will be later, so here are a few pictures for now and i will post more later when there is more to show.

that is what all of the wood is like and here is what i was able to salvage. and

i also have a small trailer i was able to load up as well, if anyone close would like to come and help me clean this up, i would gladly accept all the help i could get, thanks for looking at my family wood gloat, i look forward to making some projects from her family’s old home wood. and here is the home that her great grandfather and grandfather built. and one last picture.

THE SPEEPING BEAR CELABRATES 2 YEARS

I WANT TO CELEBRATE MY BEING A LUMBER JOCK for 2 years here today, and i want to post some of the best moments over!
the past two years…i have created over 50 projects to date since then, and i want to thank martin for this wonderful web site, ive made wonderful friends and this site has inspired me to try to become a better wood worker…i love lumber jocks and look forward to the next coming years…here are three pictures of me in my glory days…LOL… you old timers will remember when the grizzman got crazy and tried to bring some laughter into the mix…https://s3.amazonaws.com/ljimg/ll8xtvd.jpg!
then i was inspired by a great fellow jock…AUTUMN to make what i think is one of my best projects, my new work bench

Then lumber jocks went through some tough times and i promised in my own creative way that i would not leave and posted this crazy moment

So happy 2 years to me and a heart felt thank you to all of my wonderful lumber jock friends here who have brightened my life from there’s and here i shall leave this poem for this event in my life as a lumber jock

lumberjocks came to me when life had me down, i was in the midst of life’s trials that had spun me around, then came lumberjocks and so many friends, life turned around the fun just began, times of friendship soon to be had and making so many friends seemed to make me glad, wood projects began and the inspiration flowed, and wonderful comments made me begin to glow, they made me push on with new friends to be had, and helped me through my tough times and helped me feel glad, so cheers here to martin for creating this site, so many good things have come , his choice had to be right, miss Debbie signed on and made the difference each day, and with everyone’s help it gave us all a pay day…

friendship, and love have paved the way, here on lumber jocks each and every day, we have this great place for our wood work and friends…i hope it continues and never ends, cheer’s to us all for wood working is great…lets keep this site going..today let us celebrate.

what started out as a passing storm turned into the revenge of the tree onto my house, it was about 9:30 pm and i was going to bed…i started to read and then i heard and felt what i thought was a train hitting the house…my house sits on an elevated foundation and it built fairly strong, the floor are 2×10’s they are nailed and also strapped to 6×6 beams…so the floor and the wall stood the impact. It was pouring down rain with thunder and lightning all around us , so it was hard to see what had happened, but after looking out the kitchen window, i discovered!

the cause of the house shaking…we had a nice size oak tree on the back wall and it smashed the whole area around it,

The tree was a fairly tall tree and it reached out all the way over the roof, the house is 30 feet wide and its about 13 feet from the ground to the edge of the roof, so i imagine the tree was a good 60 feet or so, well come morning our insurance agent was called and within 45 minutes of that call , we had a adjuster here to survey the damage and told us to proceed with getting the tree off of the house, which we did promptly,

After some time of cutting and removing limb by limb, they removed the tree from over the roof and were down to the main trunk.

The owner of the company then came over with his fairly large chain saw and made the last cut at the bottom the the tree, and his worker inside the bucket lift pushed it from the top and it hit the ground, the grabbed it with there machinery and loaded it all into there really large truck that was about 20 feet long, and they did a fantastic job of cleaning it all up, the good part of this was that there was a dead standing pecan tree back there also and i had them fell it and loaded it onto my trailer.

So i took the pecan to my sawyer who lives about 7 miles away and he has it now cutting it into some beautiful boards for me, and told me it might be a week or so before he gets to it, but when i get it back i shall post what the wood looks like, now since i was there i had asked him if he had any walnut….well he did and he sold me 80 bf of some really beautiful walnut for a very good price, and he also gave me some extra slabs of some walnut and a few other pieces of wood that i will turn into something down the road, and here is a few pictures of what the walnut looked like…so after it was all said and done, there ended up being a silver lining in all of this, and as my friend and fellow lumber jock ellen35 told me, it was turning lemons into lemonade….thanks for reading along and i know somewhere down the road you will see some projects posted made from pecan and walnut and this one

new shop pitures

After having my shop for going on 15 years now, i finally decided to insulate the ceiling and got things moved around some and cleaned up some and so Ive taken new pictures and thought i would share them with you, i know i always enjoy seeing someone else’s shop for ideas and inspiration, and maybe my new pictures will do just that for someone else

The shop is 20×30 and has 10 foot high walls, Ive got wall fans mounted throughout for cooling in the summer and i have a total of 12 4 tube florescent tube lighting to brighten things up-

..

the main work horse is my delta 3hp 10 inch table saw.. the other main tool i use is my 15 inch delta planer, when i built my home i used reclaimed antique southern heart pine to cover the walls inside my home and i knew i would need a strong hefty planer to do so much work , and this planer has not failed me once, im using the same blades that came with the saw and they are in there for the last time, Ive purchased a new set and will install them soon. All of my main tools are delta, i purchased them in 1996 and they have not let me down once.

The rest of the tools i have are all assorted brands…mainly dewalt, porter cable, Milwaukee and makita i try to purchase tools that i know will last and fit my budget..some of the newer tools are very good…but very costly, and ive seen some cheaper tool’s do really well ,the last main tool i made this last spring, and its my new work bench, its a project well worth looking at in my projects , so go take a look at the closer details of it…i love it and what it has added to my shop,

thanks for looking at my shop and hope you enjoyed a taste of my wood working world
