I received a group of 6 non-stabilized spalted wood pen blanks. Tried to turn one, and had a large chunk come out almost immediately. I was able to finish it, but mostly with sandpaper for shaping. I saw a stabilizing liquid on line. Has anyone used something like that to stabilize wood, and does it work?

Contact Stick Fast or Turn Tex Woodworks. Both of them have the best stabilizing resin and system to process the blanks yourself. And yes it does work, way beyond expectations.
