« Part 2: Want vs necessity. Part 3 of Building a Home series Part 4: In the trenches. »

Never having built anything larger than one man can carry, I had to do some homework. Between the local public library and the internet, there was plenty of info about home construction for free. However I have learned that not everyone who can write a book or create a webpage knows what they are talking about. Most large construction prodjects starts with batter boards. I wanted my batter boards dead level. If I could not get that correct, this prodject ends. I started with low tech primitive methods. I did not get very good results. A line level is just not accurate enough past 15’. No matter how tight I pulled the line, I could move the level to different spots on the line and get different readings. Next I tried a water level. It could have worked but you need a helper that is on the same page as you. My helper can not hear good so it did not go well. Roy Underhill would gasp but going high tech was the only way. A laser level on a stand and I got those batter boards dead perfect. Time to start digging.
