Finishing End Grain? - 18 replies
The last box I made with a patchwork endgrain lid required 14 coats of wiped on Spar before I got the flat/smooth/gloss finish I wanted. Is there a quicker way? I have trouble getting that ‘piano finish’ on end grain. Grain fillers won’t work here due to all the different colored woods. Help please! You can click on my projects...

Norton 3x vs. 'Premium' Sandpaper - 11 replies
I went to get more sanding sheets and found no Norton 3x. Instead they had Norton ‘premium’. Is this 3x with a new name? I’m pretty much hooked on the 3x and hate to change.

Titebond White Trim And Cabinet Glue - 11 replies
Does anyone else use this? I like it for small projects (boxes) as it doesn’t run, will fill a gap, and dries clear. Strength is comparable to TB 2 and 3 according to TB website. Anyone see a problem with this stuff?

Dowels for miter joints? - 23 replies
I am building a project for a guy who asked that I dowel the miter joints as he likes the look of dowels. Project is a fairly large box of Jatoba and he requested oak dowels. Sounds OK to me but I don’t know that I’ve ever seen it done. Anyone done this? All comments/ sugestions welcome. Holes will be drilled perpendicular to the fac...

18" Craftsman drum sander - 8 replies
A good friend of mine offered to sell me this sander as he bought it thinking it would work like a thickness planer. It doesn’t so he used it very little. Now for the question: This is a 3HP model, he doesn’t have the manual, and I can’t find any information about a 3 HP Craftsman. It is too cheap ($450) to pass up but I would ...

Really Dumb Plane Question - 21 replies
I wish I could post this anonymously to save the embarassment but here goes. I recently purchased a HF plane, took it home, sharpened it super sharp, and then tried to use it. No joy. It just grabbed and wouldn’t produce shavings. A buddy came over (also a power tool guy) and we fooled with it to no avail. I was about to dumpsterize it whe...

Is This A Dumb Idea? - 11 replies
Could I use my 4×36 stationary belt sander to flatten the soles on hand planes? This just seems too quick and easy vs. rubbing it on sandpaper for hours. Anyone tried this?

Problem Viewing Pics - 4 replies
When I click on “zoom images”, I don’t get the series of enlarged pics like I usually do. Also if I click “enlarge this pic” nothing happens. Is this a problem on my end or is it a site glitch?

Is This A Great Buy? - 12 replies
I,ve been looking at a Freud router and Freud router table on CL for 6 weeks (priced at $250). They both look unused or very low mileage and I can’t believe he hasn’t sold them yet. I don,t really NEED them but this looks too good to pass up. Any thoughts appreciated. Sorry, I don’t see a model # in the ad but it looks like a b...

Cleaning Bandsaw Blades? - 12 replies
How do you all do this? My blades are 131 1/2” long and I have not found a way to get the pitch/grunge off without spending a lot of time. There has to be a better way!

Simple Green For Cleaning Blades - 14 replies
After all the positive comments here, I bought a gallon of this today. Now the question: do you use it straight, dilute 1:10 (light cleaning) or 1:1 (heavy cleaning). The light and heavy came from the label. Do you soak blades or just spray and brush? Thanks.

Sanding Rolls For Drum Sanders - 5 replies
Is there a significant difference in quality between brands of sanding rolls? What’s the difference between alum oxide and alum zirconia? What type/ brands do you folks use (and why). Its time to reorder and I thought some research was in order. I do the bulk rolls, not the precut strips (much more economical). Thanks for any input.

I went to a guys place to look at wood he had listed on CL. WOW! This guy had a 2 car sized shed FULL of various hardwoods (he estimates 5000 board feet. He had a second smaller shed filled with chestnut and hemlock. I’ve never done anything with either but I’m interested. He had slabs of chestnut and hemlock that were 17” wide...

The Secret To My Always Clean Shop - 10 replies
My 4 year old granddaughter loves to help her papadoc in the shop. Ellie Mae (to me), Ella Marie to trhe rest of the world spent the day with us and told me it was time to clean the shop. She grabbed the shop vac and did the whole shop. I have definately raised her right! Couldn’t get a face pic as she was “too busy”. M...

"Incra Jig Joinery System" - 19 replies
I just saw this on local CL for $100. Can anyone tell me what this does? Is it a table saw thingy or a router table thingy (or both). It comes with the manual, templates, etc. All I could read on the cover of the manual was Incra Pro. Any info would be appreciated.

I Hate Beavers! - 27 replies
The annual beaver invasion has begun. So far this fall they have girdled 12 of my Aus trees, cut down 6 small Ash, and chewed on several more trees. They don’t live on my place but come in at night and do their woodworking so they are hard to get rid of. Guns and spotlights are illegal in combination in Ok. but I have dispatched a few this...

A Little Wax Was A Great Fix! - 9 replies
I recently started having problems locking the fence on my 8 month old Grizzly table saw. The problem was getting worse by the day and I was getting disappointed with my new purchase. I lifted the fence off, put a dab of paste wax on the cam and: I’m in love with my TS again! It is smoother than ever now. Thought I’d post this in cas...

Unfinishing Used Mystery Wood? - 7 replies
I’m not sure what this stuff is called but I see a lot of older/cheaper cabinets made of it. It is composed of strips of wood [poplar?] covered with an oak veneer. I salvaged a bunch of this from my daughter’s remodel and need info on cleaning it up. It is stained and then topcoated with something clear??? The finish seems too soft t...

Most Dangerous Tool? - 134 replies
What do you all consider the most dangerous tool in your shop. Not counting modified/homemade stuff like Greg’s circular saw. Statistically the table saw is probably #1 but I’m comfortable with mine. My worst injury has been with a table mounted router.
