Clearcoating Green Cedar? - 17 replies
I sawed this yesterday and was wondering what would happen if I put a few coats of shellac, Spar, or Poly on it. Warp, crack, twist? Couldn’t decide whether to ask here or the finishing forum. Thanks for looking.

HF vs. Northern Tool Electric Winch - 19 replies
I really need to get a winch to pull logs onto my tilt trailer. The reviews on the small HF winches are mostly terrible. We have a Northern Tool store in Tulsa but I have no experience with them. Any one have any experience/suggestions to share.A quality/expensive winch is NOT in the budget and a “come along” is just too SLOW.

Will This Plan Affect Performance Of 18" Planer? - 32 replies
I recently purchased an 18” Woodmaster Planer off CL. The plan is for it to live at the wood storage barn where the sawmill is. I have no dust collection there but a scoop shovel and leaf blower work great for the mill clean up (on a concrete slab). My thought is to wheel the planer out onto the slab and let the chips fall wherever and the...

Air Drying Lumber - 25 replies
I recently posted a question on the Forestry Forum that may be of interest to LJs: How dry can I expect properly stacked and stickered sawmilled lumber to get in NE Oklahoma? (indoors in an unheated, well ventilated building) The answers I got indicated that 15% is all I can expect. I would have been waiting forever for it to get to 8-10%!

Anyone Have A 20" GO 454 Grizzly Planer? - 11 replies
There are 2 of these listed on our local CL for $500 each. Monte and I are both looking and would appreciate any input from current owners. These are 4 blade models NOT the spiral head ones. I searched but couldn’t find any reviews on this model so I’m looking to y’all for help (as usual).

Need Help With "Short Log Cradle" - UPDATE 10/27/13 - 26 replies
I need to come up with a way to saw 24-30” long logs on my Wood-Mizer Sawmill if possible. As it is now there is no way to clamp them (existing clamps are 46” apart. I came up with a cradle that DIDN”T work (Monte has the pic in his phone) today. Now I need the LJ brain trust to see what they can come up with (please). Sk...

Rebuilt/Refurbished Batteries? - 34 replies

Saddle Display Rack - 15 replies
A good friend wants to display his grandfathers’ saddles in his living room and asked me to build the display racks. I have made saddle racks for the barn and tackroom, but one for the living room? I think the focus should be on the saddles and not the woodworking so it should be designed with that in mind. I have no Sketch Up skills a...

Anyone have any suggestions for covering/protecting the footrests on my tall chairs made of softer woods? Even with several coats of Spar Urethane, the top edge of the footrests shows wear within a few months. I have kicked several ideas around but haven’t come up with anything that is both protective and attractive.

Attaching Glass To Wood - 29 replies
My wife has a 3×6’ mirror over her bathroom sink that she wants me to build a “frame” for. It goes from wall to wall so she wants a 2” wide frame glued to the face of the mirror. I have no clue what to adhere it with. Epoxy, silicone caulk, construction adhesive, or??? Apparently she saw this idea on some home imp...

Router Bit Question - 24 replies
Most of my router bits are the purple Grizzly ones. If I replaced them with Whiteside or Freud bits, what differences would I notice immediately? I can buy a whole set of roundover bits from Grizz for what a single bit costs from Whiteside or Freud. Just trying to justify the upgrade. Edit: I’m only talking about 1/4” shank bits,...

Ridgid Bandsaw- The Good , The Bad, The Ugly - 26 replies
I’ve been looking for a second, smaller bandsaw so I can leave the big Grizz set up to resaw. A good friend has a Ridgid that he will practically give me but I have heard nothing good about this saw. Anyone with personal experience with this saw? I need information: Good, Bad, or Ugly. I’ll probably leave it set up with a 1/4R...

Sanding Block Question - 34 replies
I have built a bunch of sanding blocks (one for each grit) from some I’ve seen done by fellow LJs. Now the question is: should they have some sort of ‘padded’ base or should it be just bare wood? I’ve used that thin white floor underlayment as cushion for some in the past but don’t know what others recommend.
