Howdy All,

Although I dont have my woodworking bench yet, I decided to build a Moxon vise so I would have something to clamp up my panels for the tool chest I am working on. I printed the directions for the Benchcrafted vise and was originally going to buy their hardware until I saw the price. Im not saying that its not worth it, but it was more than I could afford at the time. So I decided to try to come up with my own solution. I poked around on the internet and looked at various renditions of this vise made out of all kinds of different things. In the end I decided to buy a 1” threaded rod from Grainger( sorry I dont remember the number) as well as a pack of 5 nuts to fit.

Its made out of poplar, and I ended up having to laminate two 4/4 pieces to get the thickness I needed. I cut the threaded rod in two halves and used a 1 1/8” forstner bit on my drill press to make the holes. I then used my chisels and notched out the back of the vise to fit the nuts into. They were so tight that I didnt even need any epoxy.

The knobs were the hardest part. It took me quite a while to decided on what I wanted. I ended up literally carving them by hand. I first cut the white oak into 2×4 squares, then used the forstner bit to drill the hole for the rod through it. I then chiseled out one side to fit the nut into. After that I used a carving knife and shaped it to what you see in the picture. They are def not “good looking” but serve their purpose. I apologize that I only have the two pictures. I didnt take any while building it. Thanks for looking!
