Echo-Friendly Habitat//Furniture Building

....and so as we continue to search and re-fine a name for a website, let us not get caught in a ‘wooden’ box of our own making and in so doing, fail to gather and draw from the world around us, all that is fast becoming ‘echo friendly’.

One of the things to consider today is; are we as woodworkers fast becoming a relic of the past, due in time to go the ways of other dinosaurs that could not merge with what is happening today in the world of home//house building and user friendly furniture. I for one like to think of myself as a worker of wood…..a woodworker, and so I surround myself with the terminology that represents that kind of thinking, ‘trees’, ‘lumber’ and ‘wood’. So it was and has been an uplifting experience that draws me here to “LumberJocks” and this is great, but now we enter a new area of thinking where ‘lumber and ‘wood’ is not all that is, as we seek to draw many more into the world of experiencing home//house building.

So while we can talk the words of home//house building construction, many will also be looking at ‘remodeling’, ‘rebuilding’ and ‘renovating’, which make up the 3 R’s of building construction. Now I am dated, but over time I have been trying to change that….imagine my surprise when I first heard of the 3 R’s as to being ‘echo friendly’....reduce, reuse and recycle. I remember back in the early 90’s how I had too make some drastic changes in what I saw going on around me in the world of home//house building construction and one of the most important lessons I learned was to be ‘adjustable’. Being adjustable as defined by adjustibility, is a lesson for any who don’t want to fall by the wayside and get left behind in a world that is fast becoming ‘echo friendly’.

As we explore the naming of a website, one of the questions we must ask ourselves is what is the picture we are putting forth and what are the types of folks that we want and mean to draw to this website? While the terminology of wood and lumber has worked well here at LumberJocks, to continue using wood and lumber in the naming of a new site, will do well in drawing the same types for home//house building. So one of the most important questions we must ask ourselves, is do we continue to separate along the lines of wood and lumber or do we gather the many more who will also come if we become ‘echo friendly’.

Many still build homes, houses, barns, condos and offices today with wood, timber and lumber, as do I also, but what of those who build also with concrete, rock, steel and glass? And then we are further challenged to enter into the world of ‘greened’, ‘echo friendly’ home and house building, where words such as ‘user friendly’ ‘earth friendly’ and ‘world friendly’ draw a vast crowd of folks. These are the many who are college educated, health conscious, politically motivated, single and married, with and without children, socially enabled, with a hand on the pulse of the economy and are willing and able to buy what they want….and if it’s not out there, then they will pay to have it made according to their desires, preferences and wants. These are some of the ones who have went to building homes//houses//habitats out of ‘straw and mud’....yes, imagine that; habitats of straw and mud where the foundations and walls also are being used to do the job of insulating….and yes I hear it now, “what no-wood?” While this may cause some to hesitate, I could also go on and add that many are building with materials, (soybean foam insulation and boards) that will some day soon make one’s place of habitat totally biodegradable.

Welcome to the world that is now in our time-space, say hello to the new thinking of the day that supports Echo-Friendly Habitat Building and then also what about Echo-Friendly Furniture Building? This is something that has caused me to re-think what I am doing as I practice the 3 R’s of rebuilding, remodeling and renovations and I now stop to think along the lines of reduce, reuse and recycle. I for one, once thought that in my time I would never see the day when oils for finishing wood would become a thing of the past, but I was wrong. In my lifetime there will be the day when unless you have stockpiled yourself with a supply of oil finishes, you will be needing to use the waterborne of wood finishes. And then there was the time when I said; “I will do it my way” concerning wood oil finishes, but then I started getting feedback at furniture shows about the smell of oil and how harmful it was. And remember that even if what you know about oils and their safe use is whats right, here today it really doesn’t matter….since the one doing the buying is that customer before you and the customer is all-ways right!

Yes I am a dinosaur of my past upbringing in the workplaces and spaces of home//house//habitat building and furniture making….but I am also willing to be challenged to seek out new ways to enter into the world of the ‘echo-friendly’. No-more are the days when I will make jokes about the ‘greenies’, but I will gather around myself those who have in turn ‘greened’ me into their marketplace. I make furniture to market and sell, so experience has taught me that in order to stay in the economics of this, what I do is to be all-ways one of vision and dreams as to where the market is going. Yes I love working with wood and there are the ‘beauties of wood’ that I see daily, but I have also learned to respect the wood as I also have learned to respect the ones who are doing the buying of my ‘wood art’. Now there is the voice that is heard in the land that goes forth and asks; “can you build me a piece of furniture that is as beautiful as wood and yet is made of straw and mud?” My answer is yes, let me sit here awhile with you and get a feel for what you are wanting, then I will go back to my workspace, sit awhile with an imagination that is open….and yes, I can make ‘echo-friendly furniture’.

Well I hope I have not bored any reading here, just as I also hope I have not infuriated any who think that wood is what furniture is all about or the only way. Be open to what is all around, here in New England we have a saying that goes….”use it up, wear it out or do without”, which is great for all us hard core yanks up here. However recently I have been thinking that maybe this is a dated tune, one that needs to be reduced, reused and recycled before we find ourselves without and sitting on the sidelines, as the world around us changes and moves on. Would it not be better to say in this time-of-space today, that makes up our world, ”Stop Using It Up, Stop Wearing It Out or You Will Do Without!” Be challenged as the bar is raised, science has given us those who now create with ‘designer genetics’ in the world of DNA building//construction, so why should we not become Genetic Builder’s of Global Habitats….and Furniture!

Thank you.

” smart, work safe, and live, to work the wood….”
