I am writing this story today in order to give an example of gifts and the way we use them…..and how we encourage other’s to use them.
This story comes from a reply to a comment I started, and in reference to a wonderful statement that was made yesterday on my blog: http://lumberjocks.com/jocks/frank/blog/1056 and here is the comment by johnt; ”I think this proves a thought I’ve had for many years. I’ve felt that something that we do with our hands and mind, and the end result is deeply personal – that is art! What I think Frank proved is that when we are able to do one form of art, there is the possibility of many other forms of art gifts lurking within us. For me I enjoy my photography and music, for Frank his woodcraft, poetry and who knows what else. I would bet that each one of you here at Lumberjocks has one or more additional gifts that you may or may not be using or even are aware of. Thats my philosophy for today have a great one.”
I liked what you said about art being ‘deeply personal’ and how that all of us have these many gifts. One of the greatest challenges about ‘gifts’ is:
1) ....being able to receive them….
2) ....knowing how to open them….
3) ....and then also being able to share and pass them along with//to others….
And yes, one could write long and hard on the subject of gifts, but I will contain myself to one personal example here. Poetry has all-ways been there within me, and over the years I have written much which I call journaling and until recently, ( or since I started blogging a couple of years ago ) that much of what I wrote was held in secret on my many pages of notebooks. The words have all-ways been there within me, but I feared what others would say if I let them out or shared them….so I wrote on paper and much that I have wrote has never yet seen the light of day. And to tell you the truth this doesn’t bother me since I don’t have to go back and borrow from past written words, as every day is a new day and so these words break forth new each and every day!
In essence I have a wellspring of words within me that breaks forth with newness all the time. What I have learned from my experiences is that we need to be encourager’s of other’s to break out and use their gifts. As a child I was not encouraged to use my gifts and these were frowned upon, much due to a very tight religious upbringing….I mean when you read of what I write and then there’s my style, where does this fit in with where I have come from? And I also know that many have from way back when to even now, will continue to scratch their heads and mumble; “what are you talking about?” This does not bother me now, but there was a time when I wondered myself, about what and where these words came from and was I sane or a misfit on societies turntable. Blogging has been a new experience into the areas of putting one’s self right out their on the front line and then unplugging the stopper of my wellspring….ha!; or maybe more like lighting a stick of dynamite and placing it in the crack of the dam and blowing the whole thing up.
Now one might ask just where does this all fit in with woodworking, running a small farm, logging the woods for my furniture wood and firewood and then there’s the all-ways of renovating….building….maintenance of and wrenching machines and play….yes, lets not forget play!
My answer to the question of where, when. how and what is that it’s all art, if one but has the eyes to see. Art is all there right in front of each and every one of us and is available to each and all for whosoever will, if one will but take the time ‘in the blink of a wink’ to reach out and take what is all-ready yours. Art is ‘not for some’ and ‘then not for other’s’, art is ‘not only for the rich’, while the poor have ‘no art’, ‘art does not only dwell in some gallery or museum’, but is found ‘wherever one looks’. Art is within each and every one of us, and the worst thing one can ever do to their own-self is to say; “I have no art to give as I have no ‘talent’ of art!” I would say to this individual, we all have been given ‘talents’, now go and use what is yours. Needless to say, the worst thing one can ever do to an-other is to look at that individual and then tell them; “you have no ‘talent’ to use for art.”
Encourage yourself to use your art-full being of//and for art, encourage other’s today to use their art-full being of//and for art….and remember that all creation stands ready to be used and give forth bounti-fully to the hands of the artist. We have been told and taught that we have eyes to see, ears to hear, a mouth to taste, a nose to smell and hands to feel….but I also would say that we have eyes to feel, ears to see, hands to taste, a nose to hear and a mouth to smell….but then….I all-so listen to wood and hear it speak!
....I’m starting to listen to rocks also….
Have a very good day!!!
....i am art-fully made in image of my creation, having a body for very good works, a soul that breathes expression of my creations and a spirit that gives thanks for all the wonder-full worked out expressions of art that are before me….
