This is quite different for a trivet. I like it. Doesn't look big and bulky like a normal styled one might. Also like the underlying pattern of woods glued together. Maybe the easiest way to cut the dados for the slats to sit in would be to line up both side pieces and run them through the table saw, with a backer piece behind the last one to prevent tearout. The extra dado on the slats seems like too much extra work b/c then you have to compensate for the rounded over edge on the side pieces.
