These are a bit small for individual blogs so I am throwing these together.

1) maple pepper mill
2) skinner knife – snakewood

This is my first time making a knife. I may have made the scales a bit small. If I don’t like them, then I will have to move from snakewood to some maple burl. I will have to make the leather case for this too.

I want to by a Beall buff for these 2 but so far the “why don’t we save money by you making the Christmas gifts this year” has gotten expensive quickly so I may have to wait.

Looks great! Where do you get the hardware for the pepper mill?

I (un)fortunately have a woodcraft that I have to pass on my way home from work every day. This month pepper mills are on sale!

This is close to finished. 3 coats of amber shellac done. Looking at it under my leatherworking lights I don’t like the surface. There are some drips that I didn’t see in the shop. I guess I will see what some sanding will do tomorrow.

This was my first time using shellac like this. I assume the “tacky” feel when applying was that I was putting too heavy a coat on?

I went to assemble the pepper mill and discovered that I was 1/2” longer than the mill shaft. Had to stop by Woodcraft and buy a 10” mill and cut the shaft down. Now I will need to make a 6” and try to sell it.

The knife scales turned out to be too small. I was drilling the holes and one of them came out the edge of the scale – really wish I had not made my first attempt with the only piece of snakewood I had. I have some maple burl that I try next. I am thinking about maybe even changing to a different blade as this skinner is REALLY small in the hand.
