The nickname comes from the fact that after various business careers mostly as a business journalist, corporate spy, (excuse me, competitor analyst), I did my give-back-to-society thing and became a parole officer in Colorado. That involved going to the police academy at age 59, throwing (and getting thrown) around the gym, driving like a maniac and shooting guns. Then spent the next amazing 6 years with gang bangers, druggies, and finally the sex offender unit, with a specialty in mental health cases.

Woodwise, I picked it up from my father who was pretty handy around the house with just about everything. Good thing too, because my wife and I can't leave old houses alone. We don't flip, we live in them so the work needs to be right. Been through the Colonial and Victorian phases and having settled down to restoring a 1911 Spanish Revival Craftsman that we'll hopefully finish before we're dead.

Anyone having the same problems with Jet? Couple weeks ago I lost the arbor nut to my tablesaw. My bad, my fault, buy a new one. Contacted Jet, identified the nut, gritted my teeth at 10 bucks plus for shipping a 2.50 item and waited a week. I’m work-stoppage on a short deadline project but can make do fashioning other parts etc. The nut arrives and is too small for the arbor. I call, all the numbers are verified. I am transferred to tech support where the discussion with ol’ Goober in tech support goes like this

“The arbor nut I just received doesn’t fit.”

“I’m not surprised. We get arbors from lots of sources, they’re all different. I could send you a dozen nuts and none of them would fit.”

“Really? You’re serious? What do you suggest I do? “

“Take your arbor and the nut to a machine shop and have them rethreaded to match”

“This is how you support your products?”

“We get arbors from lots of places, they’re not all the same.”

At this point my New Jersey came out but I think I got the point across; NEVER JET, NEVER AGAIN. Another good reason for SawStop.
