Workshop news, and planing

I cannot believe it has been so long since I have visited my friendly LJ spot. I’ve now moved to a house in a small town in Sweden.

In the basement is a room called a workshop, which has a giant plywood table in the middle, very sturdy, not very me but I don’t want to get rid of it yet. But, in the attic of the guest house is a carpenters bench, yes indeedy. And, before I knew that, I managed to score a small bench (I suspect a school had it) for Charlotte, for the equivalent of about $15. So we BOTH have proper benches! Front and side wooden vises on both, and nicely rusty bench dogs too.

I have been going really slowly and just about the only thing I was doing at the former apartment was practicing my sharpening a bit, and to my recollection had not done very well. But, I was hanging windows in the guesthouse with a friend yesterday, and one of the window frames had a corner that was not square. I easily planed the frame to match, and felt proud of myself, my tools, and my ability to use a plane in anger. Small potatoes, perhaps, but encouraging nonetheless.

Now to go prowl round the site a bit.

ejvc, there are plenty of LJ’s that use hand tools almost exclusively. You might also check out fellow LJ “Stumpynubs” he has started a video series on using hand tools. He also has a website, stumpynubs.com

If you need to know something about woodworking just ask, there are plenty of LJ’s willing to share their knowledge with you.
