Edge Detail Sanding Made Easy
I don’t remember where I first saw these advertised, but I filed it in the back of my mind to try later. Well, I was getting some basic shop supplies from Klingspor and happened to remember them. This is the link to where I found them. I do a lot of small carvings, making keychains and pendants (see examples), and the small pieces can be fumblesome for my fat fingers to hand sand. These do not eliminate this, but go a long way to ease things, timewise. They reach in between my cuts a...
Orbital Work Horse
This sander was purchased because I needed one for the workshop but I also needed something to sand the floors we are refinishing in our 76 year old home. This guy proved to be a champ. The floor I started on is about 400 sq.ft. This is pretty much how the entire floor was when we ripped up the carpet; These are the results; This sander, $130.00 plus tax, paired with my Fein Turbo III vacuum busted through carpet adhesive, gouges and scratches in the old yellow pine f...
Basic Router Bit Set
My search for an all around, shop set of router bits on a budget landed me me at Woodline USA. They had the most versatile set for doing what I do, mainly small boxes and minor furniture pieces. I paid a total of $79.00 for the set, with shipping, although I think they are a little higher now. I received it in 3 days. It arrived in excellent shape. A nice boxed set with the bits nested in their own slot to keep them from bunging each other up. Each bit has a wax/rubber coating to further p...
First Lathe
Let me start by getting the disclaimer out of the way. I am a novice when it comes to turning. I have turned a few chess sets and utility shop items in the past on borrowed lathes. I really love the meditative aspects of curling wood. So, when my wife was curious if we could possibly turn out some candle sticks (she was a professional candlemaker for 12 years) I rose to the occasion and did nothing to quell the creative brain storming. I lauded the benefits of the lathe and bombarded her wit...
Lee Valley Bevel Edge Chisels
At $76.00, these chisels are a great buy for all around shop use. I have had them a year now and have re-honed them only once. They really hold an edge. The set goes from 1/4” – 1 1/2”. The oblong handles are comfortable, don’t roll around and can take a real beating. They are better than the Marples and the other big box brands that I have used.
