Today I started on a new marble machine. While doing the first three machines, I have gotten multiple questions through my email about what goes into these type machines. Well, so far, all of them I’ve done have been other’s designs, the one I’m starting as well. However, I do tweak some things and do design changes as I see fit. That is all part of the fun. Since I start getting questions after posting any of the machines though, I decided I wanted to do a daily blog on the...

I am in the process of building another board and thought I would share my thinking process along with some build pictures. When I came up with the design for the Steps board, I was thinking about how one draws a 3D box on a piece of paper. You draw a large square, and then add small mitered edges to one corner to give the appearance of seeing it slightly from the side. Making these miters out of two different woods adds to the shadows, which adds to the effect. I did this for the Steps b...

Hi Everyone, this is my first time trying to do a blog. So please bear with me, I’ll do my best!I have had a lot of request to do a blog about my rings, I do 2 kinds of rings. The Lamination style and the Bentwood style, this blog is on the Lamination style. This ring is made out of Cocobolo, Brass and has a Mother- of-Pearl inlay. I start out with 3 thin squares of Cocobolo, about a 1.5”, I have a thin sheet of brass that I cut about the same size as the wood. I lay them out to o...

I modified my Harbor Freight dust collector.
I run it through a dust separator first which works like a charm, and then the fines end up in the black can. I was tired of struggling with the bags so I added the black plastic can, i went overboard on the lever latches.

I’ve been working on a lot of Santas for the holidays and usually have a booth setup on December 1st hopefully to sell a few things. I wanted to have something I could carve on, as a demonstration or a small give-away for kids. I started looking at the 5 minute wizards, but decided to change it up a bit. These could be either gnomes or elves, but they’re really just a wizard with feet and a little carving on the back for arms and clothes and such. I still haven’t gotten ...

I dont have time to do a lengthy tutorial but I have a few photos and will write a word or two to help you get started.
You should skip the following viewpoints, they will only benefit the smart and good looking ones in the audience.
First off, take a look at Boa and the Art Deco Wing boxes. If you havent done so already, please leave a comment expressing what you do or do not like about them. I always have a few doubts about everything I make,( especially children ) like all woodworker...

I pretty much ruled out small boxes, pens and cutting boards as something that interests me. Then I got a request, and had a piece of hardwood crown molding sitting around. What the hell ? A good excuse to use the pin nailer.
The box and bottom was a no-brainer. No jig required, just bedded right on the miter saw.
The rip from the crown to make the inverted edge of the lid was fun for about a minute.
The handle is four “returns” of base cap trim.
This is the BEFORE...

This blog will show progress on an ArtBox I am building for a client.
In September I received an email from a gentleman named Sean asking if I was interested in making a custom box to display his wrist watch collection. I said I typically dont do commission work for several reasons, but if he wanted to send me details I would look it over before deciding. We worked out the bugs and I agreed to make a box to hold eight watches.
The color of the wood and the grain were important as well as...
