Work benches are low. When I was first learning about traditional woodworking, I noticed how low my friend’s workbench was. He informed me that the lower benches were better for hand planing. I’ve had a fancy for a thicknessing sander but a 10-20 inch model costs the equivalent of $1000 US over here and there’s no way I can justify that sort of spending so I looked into making one of my own. There’s no shortage of help to be had on the world-wide-web. The links I found useful include:

A couple of MAFE inspired chisel racks seem to fit nicely on the inside of the left door. Made from cherry, walnut and spalted oak cutoffs.
The top rack is not completely filled, so a few spacers on the left side.
Rules and misc, layout tools on the right. made use of some rare earth magnets.

A few months ago I spent many many hours trying to perfectly align a set of “box joint hinges” for my project ” A Little Cabinetree” After I finally got them working I installed them on the edges of the MDF sides and doors and then veneered over the whole works.
The only good part was that there were enough left over prototype parts that I could make a hinge for my next project from the cast-offs

Scraper shaves my waymaking a bunch of scraper shaves
Lately I have been making quite a few new handles for old hammers and axes, and the finish has been made with a card scraper.This tool, the scraper starts to show its face to me more and more – when a large burr it can produce shavings, and with a fine burr it can make dust. Inspired by Jeff’s (Jcoulam) homemade cyclone dust collector, I decided to make one just like his. This blog is written to show how I built it.
