Building a Moxon Vise

519 days ago by Brandon | 14 comments »

Why I wanted to Build a Moxon Vise Work benches are low. When I was first learning about traditional woodworking, I noticed how low my friend’s workbench was. He informed me that the lower benches were better for hand planing. This is true, but sometimes you just want to work with something at a higher height, for instance cutting dovetails. This is part of the reason why I found the idea of a Moxon vise so appealing. It’s a large, double-screw vise that is detachable from ...

Thicknessing drum sander - shop made

1913 days ago by YorkshireStewart | 57 comments »

I’ve had a fancy for a thicknessing sander but a 10-20 inch model costs the equivalent of $1000 US over here and there’s no way I can justify that sort of spending so I looked into making one of my own. There’s no shortage of help to be had on the world-wide-web. The links I found useful include: Dominic’s Woodshop Kawika Ukulele Sander Ray Lanham Woodcentral Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery Mother earth The Woodshop Art Herrick Luthiers’ Friend Nick’s drum S...

Hand tool cabinet #7: Adding tool holders to the insides of the doors.

437 days ago by Tim | 10 comments »

A couple of MAFE inspired chisel racks seem to fit nicely on the inside of the left door. Made from cherry, walnut and spalted oak cutoffs. The top rack is not completely filled, so a few spacers on the left side. Rules and misc, layout tools on the right. made use of some rare earth magnets. My workbench has not been this clean in a while. :) My workbench has not been this clean in a while. :)

Easy. Elegant Wooden Box Hinge #1: I could kick myself

700 days ago by shipwright | 58 comments »

A few months ago I spent many many hours trying to perfectly align a set of “box joint hinges” for my project ” A Little Cabinetree” After I finally got them working I installed them on the edges of the MDF sides and doors and then veneered over the whole works. The only good part was that there were enough left over prototype parts that I could make a hinge for my next project from the cast-offs Then this week I was making a tea box for a friend and when...

How to use a Kerfmaker (trying to help out!) Blog.

975 days ago by mafe | 31 comments »

How to use a KerfmakerOk, many asked me this question, and I have seen it again and again on LJ. If you need to find out how to make one, you can see my Kerfmaker 'Brass'n wood'. I’ll try to explain, as well as I can, feel free to ask questions if I do not make myself clear (I’m only human): Collect what is needed, in this case a base stock and two thinner side stocks, and of course a Kerfmaker.(The pipe and matches are optional, and I must warn against smoking…). ...

Scraper shaves my way #1: The family portrait...

749 days ago by mafe | 22 comments »

Scraper shaves my waymaking a bunch of scraper shaves Lately I have been making quite a few new handles for old hammers and axes, and the finish has been made with a card scraper. This tool, the scraper starts to show its face to me more and more – when a large burr it can produce shavings, and with a fine burr it can make dust. But most of all it brings a finish that you can never get with sandpaper, it brings out the life of the wood. So when I lately saw several people here on L...

DIY Cyclone Dust Collector

1405 days ago by SimonSKL | 28 comments »

Inspired by Jeff’s (Jcoulam) homemade cyclone dust collector, I decided to make one just like his. This blog is written to show how I built it. At a local home center, I purchased one 8”x24 metal duct, a 5-ft 2” PVC pipe, a 2” PVC elbow, and two 2” couplers for about $18. The first step is to make the cone. I tried to twist the metal sheet into a cone but just couldn’t make it look right and managed to get a small cut in my hand in the process. Ou...
