All my life, through out most of my careers, my philosophy has been one of a generalist. Sort of a Jack of all trades, master of none. I like the variety and it suits m taste. My collection of hand planes carries that same eclectic foot print. When I’m out looking for vintage tools, I’m just looking for planes. Part 2: The #6

John F. Rumpf did a type study in his book, Patented Transitional and Metallic Planes in America by Roger Smith and Plane Makers of Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania. According to him there 13 types between 1892 and 1901. In 1901 he sold his operation to Stanley and they took over the manufacturing. I haven’t determined if these two (the #5 and #6) are one of the last ones he made on his own, or one of the first ones after Stanley took over. I’m thinking they are after ...

Part 3: The #18 knuckle

So I’ve read that the Jacob Siegley got his first plane patent in 1878. Most of m information comes from 2 sources. Patented Transitional and Metallic Planes in America by Roger Smith and Plane Makers of Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania by John F. Rumpf. Siegley made his planes until 1901, when Stanley bought him out and continued making his planes. In 1903 he signed an extension to allow his name to be used in additional planes (not sure what that really means) but he also was paid by Stan...
