no previous part Part 1 of Norse Inspired Plane series no next part

Hey guys and girls. I’d like to share the first bit of progress on the jointing plane I am working on. Its inspired by this plane a saw while researching Norse boat building tools.

Mine is made out of Cocobolo with two pieces of Oak glued to the sides. I just got the shape roughed out today, and am still thinking about what I want the finished product to look like. Do I want to go all fancy and put the horse heads on it, or just keep it simple and functional. Right now I am leaning towards simple and functional as I plan on using this tool heavily, and I don’t think the horse heads will feel comfortable in my hands while working.
Any ways, here it is so fare.

that will be a great conversation piece both on the shelf and in the japanese toolbox
I can tell you its not horse heads but Dragon heads since its a copy of a Vikingplane
(found in Norway as I remember ) and have the shape after the Vikingsailboats
also called Dragonboats since they have the dragonheads in both ends

thanks for sharing

Yep. Ive been reading about Norse culture for a few years. I love the History and craftsmanship. My family, on my fathers side, were Vikings who settled in Normandy and then went over to England with William the Conqueror and ended up with land in Irland. I just really think the heads on that plane look like horse heads hahaha

its always funny to tease an englishman with facts everytime they say no one have ever
invaded england and conquered the islands (it never fails when the talk is about WWII )
and then tell them that our Vikings did it three times :-))))

take care
Dennis
