In the beginning

There was the idea…and the idea was good.

<<sigh>>

Well we have 3 weeks to Christmas…3 weekends. Well I have the wood together thanks to my buddy who does primitive furniture. Karson helped me plane most of it down to thickness, and the rest I got done at a local woodworkers shop. I have it marked out roughly and now am feeling the angst of not having all the equipment I would really like to have. Tomorrow I gotta go to HD and get some 1/4 and 3/4 plywood and mdf. The 3/4 and mdf are for jigs, the 1/4 will be hardwood ply for the case I am makeing.

An image of the case can be seen here:

instead of plywood panels for the sides and door though I am going to make raised panels. The Oak ply will be for the panels that make up the bottom, middle, and top sections as well as the back covering th mirror.

Instead of walnut I am going to be using a mix of QS White oak and Red oak. The show parts are going to be the QS, and the inside divider panels and raised panels will be the red oak. If I get a chance Ill take a picture of my garage floor with all the wood sorted out. Its about 50 board feet +/-

When your straight edge isn't straight, it throws everything out of alignment.

Boy what a night. I was going along ripping my boards quite nicely…I know most of my boards aren't straight straight so right now I am just rough ripping…anyway I have a jig for cutting down panels…you know the one a piece of plywood with a stop that you run your circ saw down…Well I had a board that was bowed just a bit so i went and ripped the edge with my jig…put it on my concrete floor and "WHAT THE HE double hockey sticks" the bow was worse. Took my jig and placed it on the floor…boom its got a bow in it too…..sigh luckily I only was ripping a quarter inch…tomorrow I am off to get some MDF.

Pins or Standards...its all clear in the end....

Ok, I have been agonizing over this for a bit now…Shelf pins or just use a standard….I dont have the equipment to ensure good accuracy(drill press or skill hehe) so I was thinking I would just break down and route a dado and put in shelf standards…not as classy, but workable…what do you all think?

All the world is a diamond, and around ye the sound of breaking glass....

400 dollars is my first quote for glass cutting….Thats 10 bucks a square foot.

Granted its a franchise (Mr. Go-Glass), but still there isnt much around here other than autoglass people.

OUCH!

Well a new quote is in from a local Screen and Glass shop…The prices are a little bit easier to swallow.

Mirror is 63.70
Door 30.55
sides 15.50 each

shelves - 60 each for 3/8ths or 32 each for 1/4.

Building it up....

Well, I am making some modifications to the original crown moulding profile for the case. I dont have all the bits, and my wood is all thicknessed to 3/4 and I dont have the time(only 5 more days till XMAS!!!!) to get it done. So I am modifying it to use what I have. This is what I am looking at doing.

Ill try and post some actual photos today later too.

Holding my breath, I apply the stain.....

Talk about stressful..this is the biggest thing I have ever finished and its for my wife, so it has to be perfect…hehe

here is a before…

This is a picture of the assembled top molding

Here are several case pictures after staining.

Like I said, I was nervous about this because it is the biggest thing I have done so far. I used bartley's gel stain in the shade of Honey. I still have to put the top coat on which I am making my own wiping varnish using Polyurethane and naptha(I am going to leave the BLO out).

Getting it finished

Well the finishing is coming along nicely, I forgot I needed to do the door. So the case has 3 coats and now the back of the door has 1. Got my side of the garage cleaned up so that I can move the door over to my side and the SO can get her car in the garage again. I still have to order the glass and mirror. Gonna give lowe's custom order a try as well as a place in dagsboro near Bodies…we'll see how it goes.
