Part 1: Nose to the grind stone.
I’ve been out pumping out some cabinetry. I was trained in a custom shop so the kitchens I’ve built tended to be mid to high end work. When I first opened my shop I got a large cabinet job about $40,000.00 without counter tops for a 3000 sq. ft home. Did some pretty fancy stuff. Then shifted to install work and have done that for the last 7 years. So I never really set out to do an inexpensive kitchen. The fellow I’m installing for now wants me to try to build a semi-custom ...
Part 2: What have I done!
Haven’t been out in the shop much. The cabinets are built. Doors are done. Drawers about finished. It has been a nice and educational change of pace. This week I’ve been out installing prefabs. Yesterday I peeked in the house that was being built next door. The American people are just getting ripped off. The craftsmanship was very bad…very, very bad! The painter was touching up and we chatted for a while. He was just sick and tired of being treated bad. (he used the ap...
Part 3: Finishing and Rambling and Rambling
I’ve picked a very simple drawer style. Rabbited, glued and screwed, this is a very strong design. No fancy dovetails, but I’ll put these up against most any commercial drawer for durability. In the back of my mind I’ve been wondering if I will have to quit woodworking for a living. My back just will not let me stand on concrete with out sharp pain. I’m fine lifting and moving cabinets, but 1/2 hour spraying and I’m about in tears. This last year has seen a major ...
Part 4: Hardware
Now this kitchen is just taking up space in my shop. Everything is sprayed. The drawers are all in. I’ll wait on hanging the doors till I’ve installed the kitchen. This has been fun. I’ve just been installing for way to long. Nice to get back in the shop. The new mats seemed to have helped quite a bit. I can put in my full four hour day with out any complaint. I’m looking forward to building more in the shop. I’ve got two small jobs backed up. I wonder when I̵...
Part 5: I'll never get it done!
I’ve just been swamped. Thought I’d catch you all up even if i don’t have photos of the kitchen yet. I’ve had a ton of installs to do and have gotten pretty tired of the cheap prefabs so I’ve decided to start building kitchens again. Yesterday i installed the cabinets of the kitchen I’ve been blogging on. I still have the doors to hang and crown to install, but had to pull off to get to another job. I’ve been turning down lots of work so I’ve fi...
Part 6: Installed At Last
Yes it is finished and I have my shop back, but just for a short while. Monday my cabinet shop goes into full swing. I've held back while I built my house but the time has come to catch up with some bills. Knotty Alder with a natural finish.
