Part 1: The start...

A while back I had a request for a ready made box… this time the commission is for a special item…. I do not intend to reveal the nature of the commission… suffice to say… follow along and all will be revealed… I took a board of Queensland Red Cedar [toona australis] Cut about 700 mm from one end…. dressed it… cut it in half and glued it together… Shown in the clamps… You will have to check back tomorrow to see what I do nex...

Part 2: Inlay...

I took the glue up out of clamps today… a little longer than I usually leave a glue up… Sanded and squared up two adjacent edges… then cut grooves .. And inlaid some camphor laurel strips… Cut the other grooves and inlaid more strips, The strips were cut on the table saw and ripped to width on the bandsaw.. Is this starting to look like something…. Cut to size and clamping the frame in place… biscuit joints and splined in the mitresR...

Part 3: Nearly done

I used a spline cutting jig on the TS to cut kerfs in the mitres…. Used cedar for the splines…I know I was lackadaisical in not cutting the splines… just broke off pieces, This is what it looks like before I inlaid dots at the junctions of all the sets of nine…that is … the corners of the inner 9 spaces I have inlaid the dots and rounded the corners…Just have to apply a few coats of an oil finish…And to put anyone who does not know what it is...
