My first exposure to woodworking was in 1975 when I went to work for Dawson Cabinet Company in southwest Missouri while I was in college. I experienced my first, and thankfully last, woodworking accident there when my finger got too close to an unguarded 36" band saw.

My first "shop" was the back bedroom of our 12x70 mobile home in 1977. I managed to fit an old Craftsman 10" contractor's saw, a 10" Atlas band saw, and a few Craftsman and Wen portable power tools in that 10x12 space. My first major project was a bedroom set (dresser with hutch mirror, chest of drawers, and two night stands) made of yellow pine from a local lumber yard. I convinced my wife that I could buy the lumber and all the woodworking equipment to make the set for what it would cost to buy a bedroom set. I expected the set to last a couple of years until we could afford something better. We passed it on to our daughter after using it for over 30 years. She gave it to a friend a couple of years ago (with our blessing)--still intact.

I worked as a carpenter and cabinet maker during the 80s and early 90s while working on a Masters degree and PhD.

I am a licensed counselor and work in a hospital outpatient psychiatric program in Central Arkansas. I recently completed a seven-year remodel of our home (the third and LAST of our home remodels) and am looking forward to getting in the shop, turning some bowls, and building some furniture.
