Leaving On A Jet Plane(r) - Prepping Lumber

Finally, enough chaos seems to have subsided and I can spend some time on some projects.

Woodsmith magazine had plans for a library stand made out of White Oak. I have a family bible boxed away that this would make a good display for, as well as allowing me to get rid of a stand or two that I am not overly fond of. A few months ago, a few of the Michigan LJs went to a mill in Michigan and I picked up close to 20 board feet of quartersawn white oak for the project.

I got a pretty good deal on it. There were water stains on the exterior which the sawyer said would come off. He priced it out at about 3 bucks a board foot due to the stains.

I have a Jet Combo bench Jointer that I use for the planing and jointing. Not my favorite tool in the shop, but works decently when everything is aligned right. I have an 8 inch limitation on what I can plane and face joint so I had to cut a few boards to rough dimensions before planing them. Took a good portion of the evening, but now I have a nice stack of workable boards.

Tonight I will be working on the legs and working the boards to final dimensions. This will be a pretty involved project. I am so happy that I finally am working on this.

Happy woodworking all,

David

.............where's the plans?!!..........where's the plans?!!.................

You gonna use the plans as written?............or are you gonna do some SU mods?

What's the finish, traditional A&E? Doin' the traditional fume it and choke, or short cut using some modern dyes and stains.

being a fellow geek, you know I…..........need input…...........(-:

In Seattle, ultrasound conference (work of course), ends tomorrow, Wednesday we are off to Maui…......

.........I am sure you can tell, almost on vacation…......right now sitting in a Sheraton in down town Seattle. As downtowns go, this is one of my favorites, however. Enjoying the restaurants, the weather is better than Anchorage, but nothin' like Maui…..............

.......come on…........quit tantalizing us…......where's the data?

Thanks for the comments all. I will keep this one going as I want to see more completed projects coming out of the shop :) I am on call this week and the pager has been more active than usual. Getting close to the fiscal year end so all the IT shops are busy completing projects. This one will probably be a slow but gradual project. I will be sticking pretty closely to the plans provided in the Woodsmith mag. Not sure about the finish yet.
