You can’t imagine my surprise when I went to my mailbox today and saw the beautiful, personalized, form letter from Handyman Club of America today, notifying me that I was nominated to join their club. I was told that I was being recognized for my outstanding work and that this was the equivalent of belonging to the woodworking hall of fame! And if I want to be a member for life, all I have to pay is a measly few hundred dollars and my membership would include a set of no name tools. Thanks guys and gals! I bet someone here sent in that wonderful nomination. It had to be. Someone must have noticed my blog on my cheap plywood shoe rack project and rushed right out to recommend that I be a member of the Woodworking Hall of Fame! And to make that point sink home, they sent me a free plastic drill bit guide and a small pad of lined paper to put in my pocket to jot down my future ingenious designs.

So, from the deep wells of my heart, thank you!

(sorry, I found the verbage in this form letter so hilarious, I had to share with someone :)

Greetings David: Don’t fall for that bullcrap. We all get the same letter and the plastic drill gauge. We all are wonderfully talented woodworkers who have been nominated to the Hall of Fame. Just give them the money and you’re in.

The sad thing about this type of bull is that there are apparently enough people who fall for it to make it worthwile for these idiots

hey david

if you don’t have all the money to send them right now you can do what i did. send in payments $100 a month and in no time at all you can be a card carrying handyman with nice tools. ... :-)

All of that balooney they send out, geezzz! They have a good magazine and it really should stand on its own but when the company sends out the rubish in the mail box it brings down the magazine’s credability.

I’ve been sent a letter from a company that posed affiliation with an Ivy League school and they even had a person sugar coat me with endless flattery of my excellent status so that I would spend $500. or so to advertise with them and be listed on their “A” List of members. Sophisticated but BOGUS none the less.

Sad truth is that Handyman Magazine really is a good magazine (or at least it was at one time). I have about a dozen of them that were given to me by past members and they had a very nice woodworking encyclopedia (not sure if they still make it). But I am with Kindlingmaker, no matter how polished a mag is, cheesy advertising will just snuff the life out of it. I don’t totally suck, but I do know that I am light years from being any kind of hall of famer :)

i sighned up for that crap and that’s what is was. I never got any tools to test any good ones anyway just like screwdrivers stuff like that all the tools u test u pay for u can just get them from a store but name brand though. i don’t think i spent any money with them that’s most likely why. i think i oue them some money for stuff they sent me but what i did was send it back after a few years when they sent the bill everything was still in the pkg. that’s how much i needed it or wanted it for that matter. I was a lifetime member but when i got the bill i said forget that and sent the stuff back to them with a cancel notice.

I have a complete set of 8 drill guides from them and have probley given away a half dozen more. I signed up about 8 years ago, they sent me 6 issues (I think) of a handyman magazine that’s all. I never got any tools to test and keep so needless to say I didn’t renew after the first year.

I belonged for several years on a yearly basis, primarily for the magazine and in time felt that my intrests would be better met with one of the wood-specific magazines. I then dropped my subscription, but still receive 6 issues a years.
