box for my daughters silly bands

this is a box for my daughters silly bands. iam not sure what type of wood it is it was scrap pieaces of wood some one gave me. the only thing i have left to do is figure out how to put a hing on it with out the screws going threw the thop of the box then stain it.

Silly bands for silly daughters. It looks nice.

Maybe you could drill a pilot hole and drive some brass pins (made from brass rod cutoffs) in from the sides near the back for a hinge?

Hard to tell from here.

thanks guys. and thanks for the idear steve didnt have any brass pins so i used some small brad nails and it seems to work fine cracked the wood a little but some putty should fix that. i have one question i have nevr used stain befor can i use and color of stain on this pieace? thanks david

Disclaimer: I am a noob to.

You can stain pine, but you there are some steps you should do prior to attempting it. I would recommend looking up about pre-stain conditioner and sealing the knots before actually applying stain. Knots, especially piney knots, are prone to weep or bleed but there are sealants to to help prevent that from happening. I wish I could give provide you more detailed information…but I simply don’t know the subject well enough. This only what I’ve read about while researching the for my own projects.
