It’s been a while since I last posted, but I wanted to share this with you all. I did this wood burning because I have always loved wolves. You may be aware of the Special Interest Publication connected with the Woodcarving Magazine from Fox Chapel Publishing. I did an artical for this magazine using these wolves to show how to turn a photo into a pattern. This photo is courtesy of Monty Sloan, who is a photographer at Wolf Park, in Battle Ground, Indiana…www.wolfpark.org. You can purchase this All Woodburning magazine at stands at the end of March or by going to Fox Chapels website. Those of you who do woodburning will find this a very informative magazine.
Thanks for looking…Blessings, Danette

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything…but I’m really excited about this new music box I did. Of course the tune plays “Born Free”. The music box is made from Poplar and is lined with felt.

The reason I haven’t posted in a while is because I have been working on something really special. Something that I believe will help many people. Check out what is so special….click on “Table Top Easel” below in my signature.

I love this group…I love the way everybody pitches in and shares….Blessings to you all. Hugs…Danette

A knot Welcome Plaque

I received a commission to make a Welcome Plaque of Roses. So I went out to my craft store and purchased a Basswood Round with edge bark. The piece was wrapped in cellophane with a large description sticker on the front and it’s size was 11.5” x 12.5”. I checked out the back and it was nice and clean…no knots or other unsavory marks. I bought it and took it home.

When I got home I removed the cellophane and found a large knot on the front. Not a welcome sight for my Welcome Plaque!! The description sticker hid the knot. Now, some of you maybe thinking, why not use the backside since it was clear? Well, I couldn’t do that because of the way it was cut…the wood edging only shows on one side.

I began to transfer the circle of roses onto the wood and planned on adding a rose bud in the place where the knot was. It looks like I would be able to cover it with my wood burning.

I started burning the flowers and leaves and it was starting to cover up that knot. When I was done burning I began coloring it with my oil pencils. Using this medium also helped cover the knot. I was very happy with the results and if you never knew a knot was there in the wood, you’d never have found it. All it took was a little artistic imagery and now it truly was a Welcome Plaque.

Thanks for looking.

I have made another box and the sides of the box are now perfect with the bottom…no gaps. Whoo Hoo!!! I also burned the top of one of the boxes. I have a few spots that need to be restained yet. I’m also debating if I should stain the top of the box with the burning on it or not. I made two sample pieces to try the light box stain and the other to put the dark stain on and I’ll see what it does to my burnings. I’ll let you all know the verdict. Take a look…hugs…Danette

I’m starting to make music boxes. I’m a novice at this so I’m just trying to do the best I can.

I’m having problems with the top and bottom pieces on the edges. There are always two edges that are rough and show saw blade marks. I’m cutting on a 45 degree angle using a table saw. I don’t have a band saw but I do also have a table jig saw.

What can I do to prevent these marks on the wood? I’ll post a pic of it in my projects. Thank you! Danette

I wanted to see how much I’ve improved with all my practicing. I did the Indian girl on the Basswood Round in 2005…I’ve re-done her on Birch Plywood…not as smooth as basswood, but wait till you see the difference!! When I first started burning I would burn on the hot side…so everything came out dark. Now I take my time and layer my shading. I really enjoyed doing this and thought I’d share it with you. Three years and lots of practice makes a big difference!!! Hugs…Dannie
