How dimensioned is dimensioned enough.. - 16 replies This is really a followup to a tweet by @AdamKingStudio regarding what the biggest problem we encounter is and mine is the dimensioning of long boards. I butt up against the desire to keep my boards as thick as possible but still having them sufficiently jointed that their being less than perfectly flat and square doesn’t cause me probl... |

Cupped Lumber Solution? - 7 replies So cutting the long rails for my sideboard and the lumber is quite badly cupped. I’d rather not lose the thickness to joint it flat so I was wondering if I could re-saw it and then glue it back together clamping it flat. Would this work? |

Where can I see examples of the California/Maloof Round - 4 replies I’m in the process of designing a sideboard and intend to use the California round but I can’t seem to find any good close up examples of it. I thought it was just a simple round over, but in one pic I see Maloof tying the vertical pieces to the horizontal ones with butterfly keys. Anyway if there is a decent gallery of Maloofs wo... |

Surprising Fine Woodworking Joint Strength Results - 12 replies Just got this months FWW with the joint strength article, can it really be true that a splined miter is really stronger than a mortise and tenon joint? Not to mention that a straight miter joint is almost as strong as a floating tenon. Weird. |

Suggestions - Pulse view without never checked and groups - 5 replies Can we get a pulse view that removes the never checked items? I want to be able to see only the things that I’ve actually commented on. Also groups – in flickr you can create a group and then have folk add pics to that group – how nice would it be to be able to create say the turners group or a modern furniture group and the... |

Extension Table Flatness - 10 replies What are the typical tolerances for the flatness of an extension wing? Setting up my new tablesaw (blog post to follow) and one wing is crowned .003” which prevents me getting it perfectly flush with the saw. Also if it is in spec would I be better off having the front and back .003” below the top with the crown level or vice-vers... |

Xacta Fence II vs Vega - 5 replies So my new table saw will come with an Xacta Fence II, but I already have a 50” Vega so I’m wondering which one is better? I like the micro-adjust and the fact you can place upward pressure due to the back hook on the Vega but I’m wholly unfamiliar with the Xacta design. Thoughts? |

SawStop Contractor vs Laguna Cabinet Saw - 9 replies What am I really giving up by getting the SawStop contractor saw vs a decent cabinet saw. I realize that the motor isn’t as powerful, but I’ve never had a problem cutting anything on my current one, including 8/4 maple so that doesn’t really concern me but I don’t really understand all the talk about trunnions to be hones... |

Anyone have a Steel City 35910/35910 - 5 replies I’m in the market for something with a riving knife, was looking at the Grizzly G0651 then I came across this Steel City one that looks to fit the bill. Anyone have/used one that they could comment on. The Grizzly is about $400 more because the riving knife only comes on their tricked out version, and the Powermatic/Sawstop are beyond my m... |

Do you need to joint prior to using a wide belt sander - 8 replies I’m thinking of having my workbench top (currently under construction) run through a wide belt sander to flatten it. One thing I don’t get is how this works. I picture it as big planer but with sandpaper instead of blades, but on a planer you need to have the opposite face jointed otherwise you just end up with parallel but not flat.... |

Results of using a glue line rip blade outside of its cutting depth limits - 8 replies So I’m looking at getting a new blade my table saw and was looking at the glue line rip blades, it states that it’s designed for cutting stock 1/8” to 1” thick. My question is what kind of results would you get in thicknesses greater than 1”? Awful? Passable? |
