Woodworker since I was about 14, I interspersed a career in software development and management with a woodworking hobby and latent desire to be a cabinetmaker. After graduation from University, the first thing I did was enroll in a cabinetmaking certificate program which I received from Algonquin College in Ottawa, Ontario. At one point I even tried quitting my corporate job to go work in a cabinetmaking shop but I might have been considered 'over qualified'. In between a difficult period in the industry in 2001, I got a part-time job with Home Depot in the lumber department which I thoroughly enjoyed but eventually went back to computers to pay the bills.

I now own and steward 250 acres of forest ( in New Zealand ) and found an employer willing to let me work remotely so we have made the move out of the city and have settled in Murchison, 12km from the forest property, the first step towards actually living on the forest property. After hours I can now spend more time at being a forester, managing a forest 'plantation', maintaining stewardship of a sustainable forest management plan for 200 acres of NZ Beech and kick starting a new career in forestry, wood products and cabinetmaking.

Most items I've built I've given away and there were long stretches of inactivity and just reading magazines so the portfolio of projects posted will grow over time.

This is a great site. Glad to see you here. You have some cool projects. I am going to see about using some oak to replace the handle on my peevee.

Cheers Gary for the anniversary wishes. Not that the passage of time is anything difficult, though. I’m 2 years older but 2 years wiser, thanks to LJ.

Hey daltxguy
I was checking out your projects and got a kick out of the “not so successful bench”. Looks like my handy work from when I was a youngster!

Hi Profenceworks ( Brent)! Looks like I should have got to know you a long time ago! I wish I was a youngster again, if only to have a double lifetime of woodworking. I’ll be done practicing in about a couple of decades or so :)
